It was a great event yesterday. Well done to the team for pulling in such a wide selection of Beyer Peacock locos to properly fit the theme. The trains were pleasantly busy but not uncomfortably so, and the gorgeous weather helped!
We enjoyed having a chat to the representatives from the Isle of Man and Crich, who were accompanying their respective locos.

It was also great to see the WLLR trialling a 'hop-on and off' event again, as it is one of the railways that has stuck to 'pre-booked experiences' since Covid. Hopefully the success of this event will encourage them to move to a more flexible model again soon.

My partner, who has limited mobility, definitely appreciated the shuttle bus provided from the main line station, as the hill from the town centre to Raven Square can be a bit of a killer! Hopefully this can be a feature of future galas.

Only slight wrinkle yesterday was that Zillertal seemed to be having some real trouble throughout the day, and by the end, the timetable was in tatters. Don't know if it was issues related to the coal (or whatever they're burning instead), or some mechanical issue. Dread to think what time the last train got back to Llanfair, as the previous working got to Welshpool about an hour late, and it would still have had to deal with Golfa Bank on the way back.
Hope they've managed to resolve it for today.

Thank you for your post. I am hoping to gewt to the nest major event Sept 2nd-4th and can concur about that long hike up from the main line station. i hope that the shuttle was a success and that it will continue. I absolutely loved the W & L and especially that lovely tea room at Llanfair!

Some from Saturday. A quieter gala than usual, but usual friendly atmosphere. Pic below gives some indication of the build up of ash that seemed to plague ZB over the day. Although the Beyer Bash, highlight was a front end balcony ride 'face to face' with ZB back to Welshpool.

I understand from social media that the railway recently took delivery of a lorry load of Trevithick ovoids. Whilst I'm aware Vale Of Rheidol seem to have given fairly positive reviews of this, The National Traction Engine Trust have recently published initial results from what people with road steam vehicles have been trialing, which tends to suggest the ash content from Trevithick ovoids is towards the poor end of what's available (clicky link). Indeed for road steam use Trevithick seems one of the poorest options, scraping the bottom of the barrel along with ECoal50!

On this basis, a loco with a dirty great spark arrestor that's designed to trap char from exiting the chimney and redirect it back down into the smokebox is potentially going to build up a bit more than locos without such fitments that can throw the muck out the top.
