Nothing booked for Clan Line until May according to the MNLPS site. But if you are talking about Belmond trips in general then the train is out every week and Belmond is showing 22/4 as a Kent circular.

Thanks - RH is wrong, again, then. The BP seems to have Gillingham trips booked on two consecutive days - 21st and 22nd.

That's right. There is a Murder Mystery trip on the 21st that I think is also a Kent circular.

It’s a diesel hauled Kent circular tour

Can any kind soul advise me the reporting numbers for the 3 trains which comprised Clan Line's unusual Surrey Hills circuit on March 19th? The reporting numbers do not appear in the RTT listings.

    Thank you.

    1Z82 STP 1145 Victoria (E) - Hounslow
    1Z84 STP 1218 Hounslow - Shalford
    1Y84 VAR 1442 Shalford - Victoria (E)

Train reporting numbers are scrambled for certain operators, including DB Cargo.

    Cheers, Neil

I notice that the second digit of special trains is either Y or Z. Is there any reason?

The Victoria - Shalford leg of the working is normally 1Y82.

Z signifies a special working, but other letters can be used. Nowadays the WTT/VAR/STP/VSTP indication in TSDB ( or Real Time Trains / Open Train Times for the public) is the determining factor.
Y on the former Southern Region was regularly used for regular WTT services which didn't have a defined route code. Thus the Southampton Docks - Mountfield Gypsum services and return are 4Y81 and 4Y19. Most Freight operators have the Train ID scrambled for security / commercial sensitivity.

Many of the route codes used to be explained in the introduction of printed working timetables. A few copies obtained from Antiquary at Didcot GWS or another sales stand may help explain it. Such information is now held in the Train Planning Rules issued by Network Rail to train operators.

    Cheers, Neil

Thanks Neil, I knew Z was for special trains but didn’t know about the Y designation

Clan Line at Chertsey with what may be the final steam hauled Belmond train via this route.

67 on rear to provide 'heat'. I'm not sure if it is manned, it certainly isn't providing any propulsion.

I would be extremely surprised if it was running even just for heat and not manned.

It's there in place of the generator car which is out of action. A loco on a train will always be manned.

35028 thunders up Gomshall bank on a warm afternoon, with the lack of visible exhaust not reflecting the effort made. There was a wreath on the smokebox door - does anyone know its significance?

If that is the case it is surely therefore not going via the Surrey hills either as I can't imagine it being given the main line down from Wimbledon as anything but an occasional diversion. Not heard anything of this previously. I wonder what '28 would be used for in future if its staple run is removed.
Edit - having just checked the BP web site, it appears that there are no more steam runs after the 18th May working to Bath and Bristol (which is not on RH). Is BP ceasing steam operation completely?
