Ref 123/183 5580 Burma. Note the vacuum pump that was driven by the left hand cross head. This equipment was only given to less than half of the class when built, it was removed after a short time.
5580 was the only 5X I didn't see, never underlined in my ABC !!( I had bagged 5637 Windward Islands which was wrote off after the Harrow crash ).5580 Burma , was one a number of 5x s that was exchanged from Scotland to the Midland region in the early 1950s ,so that St Rollox works could have only 31sq ft fire grate loco's on its books. The smaller grate/ firebox loco's going the other way. It was a 24E Blackpool engine for a number of years. I visited this shed on a Sunday ,only to be told it had worked a Manchester train ,wouldn't be back until Monday ,several times 26A Newton Heath was done ,only to be told ,Not here mate ,its not one of our engines. Hours spent at Rugby and Roade hoping for it to be on a Blackpool -Euston. No it was the one that got away.
