Having withdrawn shareholders benefits, the SVR have now decided to withdraw their Annual Loyalty Passes - a previously popular ticket for passengers seeking to travel throughout the year with the exception of special events. That will go down like a ton of bricks with local residents and other regular visitors alike.

That suggests to me that they are losing members, I’m not surprised. I wrote to Helen Smith outlining why I wasn’t renewing, no reply and when I told the membership secretary that I had cancelled the direct debit, no enquiry about why.

Never mind, with all the savings made by deterring these freeloading shareholders and loyalty card holders, they will be able to fund their new branded service, "The Severn Seppuku".

Had a family pass for 5 years it’s been brilliant looks like I won’t be visiting as much and spending in the shops cafes and bars next year then.

Hold on. This is a management team that has given it some thought. As a shareholder I have read the recent letter. What they are doing may not suit you but lets not trade insults. This isn’t Somerset.

So why have they withdrawn family passes?

Genuinely interested as to why you won't instead take out a membership?

I had always thought the loyalty scheme duplicated membership and have retained my membership despite moving away.

I was under the impression that the loyalty scheme was for local people who occasionally want to take the family out for a train ride or go out in the countryside for the day. They are probably not railway enthusiasts and won’t be interested in all the engineering stuff in the SVR News.

Many thanks for compiling this excellent newsletter Patrick. Once again, an excellent read for an 'armchair member' living over 100 miles from the railway! Compliments of the season to all at The 'Valley! Andy

Thanks Andy from the team. Yesterday was a busy day of last minute changes (government regulations etc) and then - the bane of any editor’s life - just after we sent it news came through that 4930 has had its boiler refitted and the last class 43 power car is on its way.

    Glad you enjoyed it

Anyone else think the latest SVR news was poor quality - the pictures in particular.

AIUI a feature of this round is they're dripping news of awards granted, so other lines need not yet despair.

I really enjoyed my end of year visit to the SVR yesterday! It was great to be back on the line - thank you to everyone making it all happen. 1501 and 34027 'Taw Valley' both looked very smart and it was nice to see 40106 'Atlantic Conveyor' for the first time. Seeing the Clayton class 17 out and about was an unexpected bonus - it sounded fantastic roaring up Highley bank!! :)
We also enjoyed visiting the Engine House - my mum was seeing it for the first time and was most impressed saying 'I wasn't expecting something like York railway museum'! It's so good having a space to see the out of ticket engines - I always think it's so sad seeing once restored engines rusting away outside.

Here's my video from yesterday if you're interested:
