And I'm back again, thanks to everyone who sent me messages wishing me well, I am on the mend, and also less busy so I've had chance to catch up with the Wagon lads.
the two wagons in the shed have been for a spin on the magic roundabout to allow access to what was the rock side of the wagon for some attention there.
98480 is coming back together, now regaining her end uprights and having the remaining brake hanger riveted back on. The brake push rods have received new swiss cheese ends welded on and drilled, these will be residing in the tin shed for a while longer though as a fairly sizable chunk needs to come off the chassis for repair before they can go back on.
I was having an "Oh yeah, I've not done that bit yet" kind of day on Saturday, part of which involved drilling out the hole in the long brake handle cross shaft, which, like everything else on the old girl, was decidedly pear shaped, some head scratching followed as said shaft would not fit between the arm of the radial drill and the floor!
83831 has been on the receiving end of some attention with a scrubbing brush (To remove the greenery) wire brush and some green primer, the bodywork on this wagon being not to bad, hopefully just some minor work needed on the brakes etc, although she does appear to need some attention to her springs.
Hopefully I will have another report soon,
    Cheers
    Olly

Great to have you back Ian and great to hear you are on the mend-look after yourself and keep up the progress. Thanks for the wagon reports we've missed them!

Last Saturday saw most of the effort going into 98480, this overhaul has taken a while owing to being a big job and spending much of it's time on the back burner with bits being chipped away at here and there, this week, the attention turned to the brake push rods, these have had new 'Swiss cheese' ends made and welded on, and needed the single hole on the other end of the rod opening out to take a bush, the plan being for me to make the bushes for these at the same time as doing the brake handle cross shaft, meaning I can make a batch of 9 rather than just making one, much more productive (As any machinist on here will know)
Drilling these holes out to round them back up is always a pain, you are never quite able to hold the whole thing, the upper side is flexing all over the place, the hole is oval so keeps snagging the drill, and that drill just wants to take the line of least resistance, that easiest line seemed to be to just grab hold of the push rod, and, as it was held firmly in the vice, jam and spin in the spindle. After a few cycles of this, I finally decided to check if the drill was actually sharp, and didn't just have a shiny front face, guess what?
Much cursing and swearing later, and a trip to the grinder, and surprise surprise, the drill behaved like a different tool, the job wasn't any easier, it just decided that falling out of the spindle was more fun than getting stuck now, but we got there in the end.
As per usual, I have a list of machining as long as your arm to do, but hopefully I'll have a bit of help from now on with some of the work, although any extra help would be fantastic!
    Regards
    Olly

Well, I apologise in advance but this weeks report will be very "Ian-centric" (More so than they usually are) and also brief, for reasons which will quickly become apparent.
Essentially I was at Bewdley a couple of Sundays back, and so on my own, and had little chance to have a look at what anyone else had been up to, hence no report last week, as I was hoping this week would provide me more to talk about, however, I was there this Saturday on my Jack Jones as well!
One of the lads tells me that my reports are the only way he can remember what he has done, so sorry mate, you may have a few blanks to cover!
98480's brakes have inched slowly forward with most of the bushes now been in the push rods, I still have one to do plus the brake cross shaft, these will then need a couple of drops of electric glue to ensure they don't move, given how long these things seem to last, I doubt I'll have to worry about having to remove them again.
I had my Covid booster on Friday, so having done 3 of the remaining 4 bushes, the side effects were starting to kick in, in the form of fatigue and a massive dose of the chills (I have honestly never felt so cold in my life) so I gave up before finishing the job, at least I will have something to do while I am duty shed master this week.
Hopefully I will have one more report for 2021, and if not, my New years resolution will be to be more reliable.
    Ian

Well, it's that time of year folks, sorry the reports have been a little sparse this year but hopefully 2022 will see a more determined effort in this respect.
Typical of how this year has gone, I was attempting to do some wagon work while being DSM on Saturday, with the effect of it being questionable how much I really achieved of either, I was on my own again and the call of the tea pot was strong. I did however, manage to connect up and test some new gas equipment ready for use in the new year.
So the only thing left for me to do, is on behalf of myself and the rest of the gang, wish you all a very Merry Christmas and all the best for 2022
    Ian
