No I do not currently volunteer
I didn't know where else to put this so here goes. A photo and a query.
I've just scanned a negative from my collection. The photo was taken by me at Crewe North mpd in 1963 and is of 46225 'Duchess of Gloucester' and 70047.
When I looked closely at the side of 46225's tender it looks as if the loco's number has been painted in the bottom right hand corner.
I enlarged the photo but whatever it is it's not very clear, although I'm sure there is a '22' in there which would make it 46225.
I've never seen this on any other loco and wondered if anyone on here could enlighten me as to the reason for it.

Yes I am an active volunteer
Crewe works stencilled the engine number on parts to be removed during an overhaul so that they would go back on the same engine, as did Horwich. This is possibly just an extension of the practice. Although tenders could be exchanged, sixteen of these engines kept their original tenders throughout their lives, and several more had one tender exchange and kept the new tender up to withdrawal. 6225 had 9743 originally, received 9749 (ex-6231) from 9/8/45, then 9799 (originally 6236) from 11/2/49 and kept that to the end, W/E 12/9/64.
