Amen to that .... albeit I'm still no wiser (and honestly don't want to be) as to why it kicked off in the first place.

268 pages, is the thread now going around in circles?

That's probably where we should leave the off-topic discussion. The avenue of speaking to me directly remains open for anyone who wishes to exercise it.

On a separate note, I recently received into my possession a photograph which has never been seen before, and rather tragically won't be able to make it into the first version of the book (but will be available in subsequent editions. The photograph shows Thompson, with the directors of the L.N.E.R., standing alongside no.500 at Marylebone for the locomotive's naming, with the nameplates having just been uncovered. The buffers are fully quartered in terms of polishing which is a lovely thing to see.

It's a truly spectacular find, and not one I expected to come across. There's always something new with this topic, I have found, and maybe there's an essence of not wanting to let go, now the major work is done, but I don't think I will truly ever stop enjoying finding more information, photos or similar with regards Edward Thompson of the L.N.E.R.

EDIT: - a little embarrassing, but worth the embarrassment! The photo is also in Tim Hillier-Graves' book on page 264, albeit colourised. It's a great photo and well worth seeking out.

    Simon,

I was thinking about you work.

Obviously as a new generation of researchers look to start working on railway history they will have to work out how to do it.

Would it be worth writing some sort of 'how to do it' so they know what they need to look for, what it means, where it is, what the key metrics are ets etc?

Simon could ask £50 for a print on demand first request, which would of course be sniffily dismissed, then successfully hold out for £100 when the desperate second request from the same poor sod arrives, once they've eventually twigged just what's involved in creating their masterpiece! :)

I actually do go into this in detail in the Thompson book over the course of a few chapters which give specifics in evidence and research aims, etc. But happy to do something similar elsewhere. Mind, it’s just my views and others will differ.

Just a heads up to say that the book has now arrived into the warehouse, and pre-orders will be heading out very shortly. I am liaising with my publisher as we speak!

Strathwood have delivered it four weeks early - which is fantastic. Delighted!

I'll bet that was a long and tiring day... But what a proud moment to be able to look back on and hopefully share with your own family in future years. Well done!

Congratulations - you have both filled a gap in the history of LNER CMEs and confounded the inaccuracies of previous writers whose previous reputations will now take a battering as their inadequacies are exposed.

I hope it’s fair to say that the book may yet rock a few world views.

Regarding the data - the whole of the Use of Engine Power document didn’t make it in - if anyone does want a copy, I can provide a limited version of the spreadsheet. Just ask here and provide me with your email address.
