she performed quite happily by all accounts on the SVR in the spring and whilst I appreciate the gradients are steeper I am intrigued

It's T.E. is quoted as 23,100 lbf, which is only 90% of that of a Black 5 or Standard 4. That missing 10% could be critical, hence the concern. Although the quoted gradient is 1 in 49, there is a significant section at 1 in 42/43 at Darnholme. Do the maths and you'll see why. It’s also still to be tried on a train for various reasons. Until then, who knows?

Not from what I heard it didn't. Obviously it will need some getting used to, some crews felt it needed front end work to improve its performance.
I was wondering if the NYMR would dare to use it on the banks unassisted having heard the above comments and now we know. I suspect a lot of people going to the gala will be expecting a ride behind the Saint and won't know about the loco rosters and they are going to mightily disappointed. I don't understand the thinking that it's rostered on the goods train and not even being piloted/banked by another loco on a passenger train for two of the days given the understandable interest in the loco.

I don't know what you have heard but I can guess.
It is out on passenger trains, albeit assisted. It is supposedly staying for a few days after the gala and should be in service then.

I would suggest that you have been misinformed about its stint at the SVR. The valves events could do with settting up correctly, but in spite of that it performed well provided that the cut-off was not shortened too much. Admittedly the NYMR is not the most suitable line for large-wheeled passenger locos, but Leander managed to get up the hills when it was there for a visit.

I didn't expect the Saint to be allowed out on its own for one minute. The loco I was most looking forward to seeing was the 8F. I'm doing the Friday and Saturday and it isn't doing a solo run until 7:15 on the Saturday night. I'll have to leave around then.

I had a cracking run behind 6990 single headed a couple of years ago on the NYMR, so not an issue with some other GWR 4-6-0s. Perhaps they will get it there and once tested it will be trusted a bit more.

I had an amazing ride behind 6990 solo but it has smaller wheels than 2999 and is an improved version of the original Halls. I was also on it when 6023 took a back seat and let it do most of the work!

63395 won't be coming out to play for the gala. A couple of other changes likely but these are simply loco swaps.

Possibly I have, but it came from two drivers. I am sure that like all locos it will have the odd idiosyncrasy and will need getting used to.
    Often locos surprise too.
I remember the J27 being tried out on 7 coaches on the NYMR many years ago, it coped, and that was when it was blowing off 15lbs light.
On its last stint in traffic 4771 was on a considerably reduced boiler pressure but still performed well, as You Tube video shows, on its last day in traffic .
As for 2999 we shall see how it does this weekend, hopefully, well enough to do some solo trips.

And the 12.30 Grosmont - Pickering. Does anyone know if the 9f has failed or is this an operational requirements change?

63395 is still shown on the allocations for the next three days on the website. I hope these will be updated at some stage?

2999 is pencilled in to do the diagrams originally allocated to 63395 on Friday and Saturday.

It was Slogging up on the goods past Beck Hole, then sounded like it was down to walking pace at Darnholme. I will be very surprised and delighted to see it on a full set.

Couldn't they run it with a banker all day?
