Industrial Loco Updates

Plymouth has lost so much in the way of industrial lines. There used to be a narrow gauge system around Ernesettle. If you stood on the north side of the Tamar road bridge, you could see shunting on a pier and there were lines burrowing into the hillside. Gone now, and due to military nature unlikely to have been much recorded.

Ring Haw was running yesterday on the CVR, with a goods train. Luckily I had my camera with me.....

Very Nice picture. Ring Haw is a smart loco with a smart livery, well done to the NNR for returning it to steam! No. of working Hunslet 16" locos swells to two- "Darfield No.1" and "Ring Haw". Which will be the third...?

The view from Thomas Hill Vanguard 125V at the Lee Moor Crossing site, gates are now on, ramps up to crossing being constructed both sides, then more fencing off of the site and we then continue northwards though where the yellow Liebherr Road/rail digger is top of photo.
The original lee moor line ran from the left of the picture diagonally across it to the right and the original crossing gates were staggered by quite a bit. Feb 09
2nd photo is of Andrew Barclay 0-4-0ST 'Albert' heading North with a santa special Dec 08, pulling the Class 117 DMU
3rd photo is of Bagnall 0-6-0ST Byfield days before tank, cab, and lots of other bits were removed Feb 08

Nice to see progress for you guys, you seemed to disappear off the radar for a number of years till recently.

Albert looking good, just like a nice clumpy Barclay should. Interesting to note the boiler feed pump on the running board, presumably she still has an injector on the other side?

 

yes she does have drivers side injector as well as the water pump it is a good idea as when it was on the EKR it used to be set at a regular speed and would run for a whole trip without using the injector once, can remember it used to steam very well i suppose this was down to a constant feed which would keep the boiler more efficient than injecting various quantities at various times it kept the water/steam levels pretty constant which is pretty good for a little 0-4-0 up 1 and half miles of 1 in 75 \/ through a long tunnel too!!!!!!

 

Yes, agree with you Avonside, the PVR never seems to be that publicity hungry unlike other railways, even on running days we get Plymouthians come up to us and say "I never knew you were here!" Formed in 1980/81 too. Had a few mad early years when we had GWR 3802 & 7229, SR 34007 Wadebridge, Standard 75079 & BR/GWR 4160,(all ex barry) not to mention the ex SAR GMAM Beyer Garratt 4112 !! All now gone, 3 of which have since steamed. The railway then recut its cloth according to its needs and what it could realistically achieve. It has taken years, but we don't owe a penny and are solvent and we own the trackbed from Marsh Mills to Plym Bridge too.
Getting back to Albert, I am not sure about the ejector on the other side, she must have one #-o Not a footplate person myself, but I will look next time. :-k

 

Hello again, some pics taken of Sir Thomas Royden taken by one of the youthful team helping out(doining everything actually!) Progress so far has centred around cleaning and painting frames,bunkers,motion,brake rigging and plate work. Hope to have the boiler up soon so we can get in to the frames easier and get it all cleaned up and painted again! =P~

 

Robert Heath No.6 has had the tank and cab removed as the first step to a full boiler survey to ascertain the work required for a return to steam. Also, due to the condition of the chimney base (as seen in the first picture), a pattern for a new base was made, a casting done and the chimney fitted to the new base.

 

Great stuff Avonside 1563! Tommy has had a bit of a 'pink' session yesterday ready for her first top coats of red gloss! Thought it best not to take pictures at that stage!! 8-[

 

While inspecting the water-space on No.6 a washout nozzle has been discovered.

Nothing too dramatic, but reminds of cleaning out Whiston's tank when it was first being done and finding a tin of sardines (empty) and the evening that Lewisham's rear sanders were found to be blocked by one of Rocky's payslips. 8-[

 

I'm sure we could open a whole new can of worms (or should that be sardines?) with this one.... but I do remember the Lewisham incident having spent ten minutes emptying the sand box with a rusty tin can to find the Roster Clerk's payslip!!! And doesn't Whiston's boiler still have a steel ruler in the firebox water space? #-o

 

According to the Tanfield Railway's Wiki page, Wallsend Slipway No. 3 is being cosmetically restored. Is this accurate?

 

Bit more ticked off of Tommy today, we managed to get the reverser off and cleaned up but need a new retaining pin on the lever to the balance weights..

Starting to get some of the springs/inside motion cleaned up and freed off ready for a bit of TLC, then the outside motion and pistons to fit, looking good! \/

 

I know that this is probably not the right place to ask, but as the industrial boys & gals!, seem to know a lot more about their railways than most. I am desperately trying to get hold of a Vanguard locomotive badge to go on ours here at the Plym Valley. Two have recently appeared on ebay, and I have missed out on both of them by £1 ! ](*,) . If I can locate one, it will be going back onto a locomotive, not gathering dust in someones garage/shed/bedroom whatever. Or if they are still available?? =P~ . Last thought is to be lent one to have another one cast?? Anyone able to help please :-k

 

Wheels are on on wheel lathe and the boxes have been "done", I understand that she wont be steaming however.

I have my own seat in the Causey and can thus say these things !. Only the 2ft gauge Black Hawthorn & traction engine to track down next week.

 

the plan was for it to be cosmetically restored for the museum as an example of an engine that worked locally. the work on the boxes and wheels was carried out in order to facilitate the run down the hill (i helped drop them out), with other work being done once the wheels had been reinserted. however since the plans for the museum were shelved, and plans for this engine's cosmetic restoration were shelved also.

i' sure i've asked this before, but is there anyone on this forum who was a member of FONT (it's owning group)? i am always looking out for information on this fantastic little engine.

 

Aren't 'Escucha' and the traction engine stabled in the little three road shed by the turntable?
