Isn't it the route Vintage Trains used a lot when their trains were going north?

Yeah they used it a lot. I did a trip with them in 2018 (I think to Chester) that went that way.

It used to be quite common to go that way, though invariably there would a few broken windows on the carriages after getting stoned on the way.

Thanks for the replies re the 'Sutton Park' line. I possibly should have realised that it was the preferred route of VT if they were heading towards Crewe.
    Interesting route, anyway!
@torgormaig I would imagine that the evening commuters at New Street had quite a surprise!

I doubt it as most people these days have their noses down to the little screens. It still amazes me how often when picking up or setting down passengers on a charter, someone will ask if this is the Preston service (other destinations are available) after all there's very little difference between a 4 coach Northern unit and a 12 coach steam hauled charter.

HaHa! yes, you're very probably correct! (in fact I know you are)...but it is the kind of thing that would make my day if I happened to have the misfortune to be hanging around at New Street!

Any early ideas as to what will be on the front of the Lakelander on Saturday, I assume one of Braunton, Black 5 or 46100?

I've been told Braunton by a reliable source, as the Black 5 is currently in bits for routine maintenance

Would be a nice change, as its going over Shap I had assumed likley to be a 75mph rather than 60mph capable loco, on that basis I had just assumed it would be Royal Scot.

It's on their website (and still bookable in Premier Dining) with "confirmed" timings, so I assume it is running. https://saphostrains.com/journey/the-fellsman

It was swilling down as I left home, the rain eased during the journey and by the time I arrived at Chapel Lane, Hoghton it had stopped. There were three of on the bridge, all regulars. Despite it being only 15C it felt humid and much warmer. Just before the train was due the sky brightened but light rain began to fall.

Several distant whistles, then steam in the tree tops before Braunton appeared under the occupation bridge; the exhaust was dark and lifting well from her wide chimney, a whistle coincided with another shovelful of coal that turned the exhaust even darker and then under the bridge. She sounded as though she was working hard and was travelling at a fair speed - but what about the diesel, just how much noise was coming from the 47 on the rear? I couldn't possibly say, as at the exact moment the 47 was passing under the bridge a United Utilities sewage tanker was crossing over it.

I watched as the train made its way towards Pleasington, the exhaust was slow to clear in the almost misty distance. Back to the car; a look at the stopwatch and quick calculation gave a summit speed of 33mph.
