Power station water tube boilers were drained and purged with nitrogen if they were out of service for an extended period

I think the Mid Hants-owned Black Five 45379 is already at Margate, so it looks as if Mr Hosking may be willing to allow other selected loco owners to share what will be a most useful facility.

There's a 4-SUB and a Beavertail here, and 60007's support coach was stored there for a while.

Looking forward to seeing @Sawdust’s work on the Beavertail shortly :) I’d forgotten about the other stock stored there that yourself and @John Petley have mentioned, so it does like other groups can use it for storage then.
Wouldn’t it be nice to have a few more facilities like this around the country? ;)

The killer is water soaked lagging . Corrosion on the outside of the barrel and firebox , especially on the top

Just having a thought, there are quite a few empty portal frames sheds with decent access out there (advisingsome clients as to what to do with them), might be a business in offering storage for a few k's a year for owning groups.

Detube the boiler or remove a small number of tubes, allow air flow and you won't have issues

The problem can often be corrosion on the outside. Drained and with the plugs out the inside will generally keep ok.

Various methods are used to keep oil filled electrical power transformers dry, even though they are vented, I don't think there is any basic reason why one of these techniques couldn't be adapted, for storage purposes.

So, If the cladding was removed, lagging taken off, boiler de scaled, given a coat of protective paint boiler re clad, would that do enough to stop the external corrosion if an engines going into storage for a period of time?

Keeping it out of the rain is probably the best first option.

I can’t open the one to one website. Does anyone know if this facility is open to the public yet.

I think one of the magazines recently suggested it will open next year.

As a scientist working in a UK Power Station, I can confirm this is still current practice. A CCGT HRSG unit will be nitrogen capped if expected to be out of work for anything more than a few weeks.

Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Heat Recovery Steam Generator

uses the exhaust heat from the gas turbine to generate steam to turn a steam turbine to generate electricity as well.
