Like the class 503 unit did for a few years a while back.

It was the Class 502 unit that was at Tebay a few years back...

I can't imagine the Far North Line and 10 coupled axles (even with a flangeless driver) would be an ideal combo but they weren't based any further north than Carlisle so I'd imagine this is the furthest north one has got. Hopefully its contract overhaul means it becomes a member of the Strathspey fleet for a while. Owner also owns 37674.

The Strathspey could do with enlarging its steam fleet, so let's hope it has a good future ahead of it there.

The 25 ex-WD Austerity 2-10-0s were based in Scotland, I believe all at Central Belt depots (Polmadie, Motherwell, Carstairs, Grangemouth). Not sure how far north they would have worked, but unlikely to have been on the Highland Line.

Central Belt wasn't short of unfitted, slow freight and block work for them. A few 2-8-0s popped up on Perth South's books for a short period too.

The fleet isn't in bad shape. The railway can afford for 828 to have been away since the start of 2022 in Kent. 46464 should return later this year or early next which will give quite a useful fleet (along with 5025 and 46512) for an essentially 1 engine in steam railway with occasionally 2 in operation.

Yeah with 46464 back it'll only be the Austerity out of traffic that could haul a service train, and the overhaul of that is slowly progressing as is.

Is WPR no.17 still resident? She seemed to be the main service loco for a while?

Yes it’s in the back of the shed at Aviemore. And you were right, it was the only operating engine for a while. Not a great engine to work on but plenty of power when required.

Though the locos that were still in stock were all withdrawn in one fell swoop in December 1962, seemingly victims of an accountant rather than operational needs.

Steamed well and like you say, plenty of power but wasn't soup course friendly.

Has a surprising turn of speed, only had the one trip behind it & I was initially disappointed as had been hoping for the Ivatt 2, but it did impress me!
