    Hi Guys

Does anyone know on here where I could get some patterns or pre-cast driving wheels at reasonable prices, Jim Vass does them but at £75 a wheel I can't afford to buy them. If someone has a pattern I could borrow that'd be great as I can get hold of the bogie and tender wheel patterns so could send them off to be cast at the same time probably making it cheaper for me.

Also any other bits you or others may have that you dont need or want to sell just p.m me

  2. I was going to suggest jim vass £75 sounds about right try asking within the 71/4 society the membership is vast so someone may have something.
As a side note im building a pair of locos one steam and the castings for the cylinders and valves ect are £500 so your looking at a expensive hobby

I know its an expensive hobby but I just think £75 for a wheel that is unmachined and only cast is a bit pricey!

Don't tell me you are going to number it 73096 once it has been built (Obviously once you have saved for the next 50 years)??

I thought about building or buying a partly built model of a Merchant Navy 6 months ago that I saw for sale - Trouble is you need quite a few grand to build em and keep them running..... I still might give this a go once the wife goes back to work fulltime......

Jims castings are very pricey, I started a Dart (GWR 14xx), wheels were 47 each from Jim, 68 for set of 4 from Spink (now Blackgates) and not much more from Reeves.
It is an expensive hobby but sometimes we are taken for a little ride.

Problem is as far as I can see noone has built the castings apart from him so ideally i'm looking for a modeller who had the same problem and built a pattern or maybe even make a pattern myself, or though I don't want rectangle shaped wheels #-o

How about look close to home; get the drawings and take them down there to see if the MHR can cast them - If you speak to Martin he might beable to point you in the right direction?! Other than that Billie's other half might beable to???

One other problem with Jim's drawings (so I have been told and obviously, I don't know how far you have got with this project), but his drawings are not fully dimensioned and assume you buy his castings. So for example, if you wanted to fabricate a frame stretcher, that Jim supplies as a casting - all the "as cast" dimensions are not on the drawings.

I've been told this as well, fortunately I know another two guys who are building this model and have already said they'd help me.

Unfortunately 34007 even with drawings I still need patterns to cast wheels, hence why I'm asking if anyone has them.

Have you spoken to Eastleigh lakeside railway there railway is 7 1/4". You could alway see Chris Churcher he is building a class 47 at the MHR and he knows the people that own/look after the lakeside railway.

It still might be worth looking at asking Martin.... He has the know-how and possibly where to begin looking?? (Just a thought)
