My friends SSN in Rotterdam restored this original WD Austerity, a 1943 Hudswell Clarke.
It is now a runner as NS 8811 , but the gauge glasses on it are industrial ones and they don't work right and are difficult to read.
As their 'correspondent' in the UK I'm being asked if I can find some original Austerity gauge glasses for them.

Does anyone on the forum have a pair, or know where to look?

    Many thanks for your help.

Get in touch with Chanter biomed they supply new gauge frames at reasonable cost.

I passed on the Heritage Steam Supplies link, and they were delighted. Didn't know we still made that stuff!
That said, while I think I have answered their request (thanks to 32110 :) ) an original set would probably still be received with open arms, and might be cheaper than making up a set from a catalogue.

Also worth having a word with Locomotive Maintenance services at Loughborough; they specialise in austerity parts and are making a set of gauge frames for me at present.

Thanks, that's a good tip, and I actually know someone there through 76077!

We only tend to think of loco boilers but there are plenty of industrial boilers out there in such places as hospitals, breweries and a lot more. They all require gauge glasses. As has been said, Chanter Biomed are a major producer. The only problem with them is that they don't have the traditional bent cock handles but others can supply replacements to this style. I think that South Coast Steam can provide copies of BR standard ones,; not sure about LNER and Southern versions.

As it happens I called in at LMS today; there were three sets of austerity gauge frame castings, fully machined, sitting on a bench. I gather LMS have a CNC milling machine programmed to deal with the raw castings. Their next project is to produce LMSR pattern brake application valves.

If you wish to place an order with LMS I am sure they will give you details of their rigorous certification regime; so far the boiler inspector is fully content with all the work done on our boiler and there is a very fat QA file. Their clientele includes main line certified locomotives and there are usually several boilers on the premises at any one time.

Thanks to you we are in touch!

Btw I know LMS a little bit as I am a shareholder of 76077, on which they are working.

    Hi Breva,

Your frames for 76077 are right next to our boiler, and looking very good.

Luckily we still have the original boiler (in good condition too) or else we might be tempted to walk away with yours :)
