Is there a reason it's sat at Crianlarich 52L?

Does it not make it easier to shunt on arrival in Fort William to save uncoupling and running round? I've seen Ian Riley do that at Manchester Victoria for that reason when heading back to Bury. Black 5s T'n'T with the support coach - it does look a bit odd but makes life a lot easier at the end of a long day.

I believe so, into the station then straight back out into the yard.

The stock is usually propelled in from Fort William Junction on these ECS moves, and between station and depot on the service days.

Reason for the K1 moving round has been a couple of bridges now being deemed too heavy for an RA6 engine to double head.

The real reason for this move was the fact that as an RA6 loco the K1 is now prohibited from double heading over the West Highland. It was always planned to run her round to the back of the train at Craigendoran. Besides there is no reason to run round at Fort William as propelling is permitted from the junction through the yard to the depot.

The other place where a top and tailed loco move is sometimes used is from York to Grosmont so save running round at Battersby. As you say it looks odd but is a practical operating move.

EDIT @jonathonag has beaten me to it

Anyone know why the locos and ECS went into Carlisle station on Saturday afternoon rather than to Upperby? Or what they did between then and leaving on Sunday morning? I can't see any relevant movements on RTT.

I don't think anything has been stabled overnight at Upperby for years. These days locos are stabled at High Wapping sidings beside the signalbox, where there is good access to both power and water. The stock was stabled nearby at the station in A siding.

It is a GUV that goes to the Fort every season and is used there as a stores van.
