Steam Railway SR506 - on sale now

Discussion in 'Steam Railway' started by Thomas Bright, May 29, 2020.

In this edition of Steam Railway, we celebrate real working steam as we go behind the scenes at the world’s last working roundhouse – Wolsztyn in Poland.

Despite the global coronavirus pandemic shutting down steam operations elsewhere in the world, this sole-surviving bastion of public, timetabled passenger steam-working continues to fly the flag, and Steam Railway explores just how this extraordinary operation still survives in 2020 and what the future holds for one of world steam’s last remaining outposts.

There is more working steam as we uncover the delights of David Buck’s incredible garden railway, where steam still runs despite the national lockdown, and continue turning back the clock to showcase the industrial steam gems from 1970 – steam’s ‘coldest’ year.

That’s not all, as we pay a farewell tribute to ‘Number Nine’ now its main line exploits have come to an end, explore the Isle of Wight Steam Railway’s fascinating project to restore its rake of Oldbury coaches, while Heritage Railway Association CEO Steve Oates outlines his and the HRA’s vision for how the preservation movement will survive the Covid-19 crisis.

As always, we’re still bringing you the latest news, comment and analysis from the world of preservation, including:

    · ‘GlosWarks’ cancels 2020 events in response to Covid-19

    · Approach made to bring Waddon home for ‘Terrier 150’ in 2022

    · Bressingham wants to steam standard gauge Garratt William Francis

    · Coronavirus puts Penrhyn Castle transfers on hold

    · ‘Flying Scotsman’ coach for Bo’ness teak set

There’s all this and more in the latest edition of Steam Railway – the world’s biggest selling steam magazine. On sale now.

Photo at bottom of page 56. Caption - "A truly immaculate'B2' No. 61671 Royal Sovereign hauls the Royal Train, with Queen Elizabeth and Price Philip on board, between Biggleswade and Sandy on May 3 1953. The locomotive was rebuilt from 'B17' condition by the LNER in August 1945". Er,..."hauls the Royal Train" - in Back Gear....? A bit more to this photo than the caption suggests. Also, as the Coronation did not take place until June 1953, was the Queen still officially referred to as Princess Elizabeth in May that year?

Page 42 - "For those who have ever seen 'Union' flash past, it's a fair chance that the grinning figure they saw leaning from the fireman's seat will have been its owner hanging on the wire cord for the chime whistle." I think not. To operate the whistle on an A4 there is a cross-shaft mounted on the boiler backhead with a lever at each end.

You claim on the front cover that Steam Railway is 'The world's biggest selling steam magazine.' I don't know about the rest of the world, but the Audited circulation figure for SR gives an average of 32,365 copies for the period January to December 2019. I also note at the foot of what would be page 96 that you claim several hundred more sales at 32,635 copies. The Railway Magazine in its December 2019 issue gives them 34,543 copies, and according to the Audit Bureau Circulation, this figure has at times exceeded 37,000 copies. Perhaps you could explain these discrepancies?

The Railway Magazine is not a 'steam magazine' - it covers all types of railway traction. To dispute Steam Railway's claim, you'd have to find another magazine that dealt solely with steam railway topics and had a higher circulation than SR.

Please enlighten me as to the titles of these other 100% steam railway magazines. Doesn't having an article about coaches in the current issue dilute the 100% steam content somewhat?

I didn't say such a title exists, maybe you should go back and read my post again?

I don't see how articles on coaches would dilute the steam element of the magazine, the claim about steam still stands unless they have articles on diesels or electric locos.

It's a bit like a restaurant claiming to be the best restaurant in town, when it is the only restaurant in town. Technically the statement is correct, but perhaps a little bit cheeky. Steam Railway can equally claim to be the world's best selling steam magazine if it is the only steam magazine in the world. I have no idea if it is true or not, but quite frankly life is too short to nit pick about such an irrelevant thing.

Without coaches, there won't be many steam trains.

The Isle of Wight Steam Railway is greatly enhanced by its collection of pre-grouping coaches.
