One in B/W for a change 45407 sloggong op to Corrour Summit. The curve behind the train is known to enthusiasts as Hell's Corner and takes the line round to run down to Tulloch all the way alongside and above Loch Treig

All great stuff John, and I especially like the dark and moody b&w one - who wouldn't?! "I was there" as well, and took same - or thought I did - except from lower down. Unfortunately, I put on a grad filter (something I rarely use) but forgot to switch to manual focus....... you can guess the rest. Bugger!
Although these days I don't often travel that far for steam photography, it's fair to say the majority of us, having made the effort to get there, WILL press the shutter and try to make the best of it. As has been suggested, dull and flat - and frequently wet too - is far more typical of conditions than sunny, cold and crisp. As we know, some environments are much better for "making the best of it" - especially since Photoshop became our friend - than others. The wide open spaces of Rannoch Moor will provide the potential for stunning images even in the murk rather than looking along a tree-lined cutting in suburbia!

Now that's the curve I call Hells Corner (or Hellfire Corner if you like) not the one behind the train. If you get round that corner the chances are you'll make it to the summit. But I could stand to be corrected on that one.

People often think that the Mallaig line is a hard one to fire over but not if you know the road. It is all short sharp bursts uphill and then down the other side which gives you ample scope for recovery. Getting to Currour on the other hand is altogether different. It is nearly 30 miles of continious collar work, starting off with a cold engine. More of a challenge and much harder work - therefore more fun IMHO. Many steam men back in the day must have been very glad to reach Hells Corner.

44871 at Sword Loch in differing conditions - grim on a charter, lucky on an ECS move.

A couple of 44871 again in very differing conditions south of Corrour.

So why the name? If it’s a relief to get there, then that name seems odd.

I think this photo has inspired many of us Bob, and still does.
