If I'm not mistaken that's David Shepherd looking out of 92203.

Each to their own - for a standard 5 I'd go for Black every time though.

One of the best steam galas I’ve been to and from memory 35005 was renumbered 35008 Orient Line.

I wouldn't normally share these, as they are scanned from 35mm slides, taken with a cheap lens, but maybe of historical interest to anyone who was there. The first one is from 1979, the others from 1980. 2020-04-30-0015_DxO-Edit.jpg 2020-04-30-0016_DxO-Edit.jpg 2020-04-30-0017_DxO-Edit.jpg 2020-04-30-0018_DxO-Edit.jpg

Nice to see some photos from the old days and always interesting to see how the railway has changed over the years.

What a shame 35018 never got to steam on the Mid Hants. Plus I understand from a book I purchased some years back 35009 Shaw Saville is also listed has another Loco part of the home fleet. Although it never arrived that Ropley and went to Swindon. Anyone remember who owned 35009.

    thanks.

I can't say who owned 35009 at this time but I noted it around the old works turntable area at Swindon in December 1994. The loco spent some years parked at Brighton beforehand I seem to recall.

These are great photographs, I find it fascinating the earlier days of preservation when lines were just starting out and locos were still being rescued- some of the stories are brilliant.

    Regards

While we're idling down memory lane, here's a video of the Sept. 2003 Gala.
The programme starts with the locomotoves on shed at Ropley, being prepared for the day's duties. This is followed by a trip along the line with each loco in turn:
LBSCR E4 0-6-2T, 473 Birch Grove, visiting from the Bluebell Rly
    LMS 2MT 2-6-2T, 41312
"Fuller" 0-6-0, 10 Douglas (converted from Austerity 0-6-0ST "Linda")
LNER A4 4-6-2, 60009 Union of South Africa, visiting from the Severn Valley Rly (I think that's where it was based at that time)
SR Battle of Britain 4-6-2, 34081 92 Squadron, visiting from the Nene Valley Rly
BR 4MT 2-6-4T, 80104, visiting from the Swanage Rly
Please drop a few quid in the MHR's appeal - Ta

And just look at her now!

I liked the pictures of 34016 as well. Bodmin is the first full size engine I have a distinct memory of seeing, sat on my father's shoulders watching her come into Alton from the path alongside the station approach, back in her first spell of running. As a result, some part of me still considers rebuilt light pacifics to be the ideal form of a steam engine, which everything else can merely approximate to a greater or lesser degree...
