A different steam loco each way. Can't be bad. Have taken a chance that this one will be pure steam.

Anyone know yet which engine will substitute if N0 9 isn't ready?

I assume it will be 45407 as that will be the only available engine at Southall. But I'm sure the Riley team will try their best to get 09 repaired in time, still have a few days left.

I think 45407 may be heading back to Bury tomorrow.

I doubt it, more likely remain on standby in case No 9 is not available.

No steam on the outbound run. Only the duchess on the return.

The repairs currently being carried out on Number 9's tender will not be completed in time for this Saturdays trip to York. All being well Number 9 will resume its main line commitments on December 14th. Photo by Jules Hathaway shows Number 9 at Aberdeen in 1992.

On Facebook page about 11. 00 am today.

Yep, 45407 is heading back to ELR so no replacement. Such a shame but at least I can have a lie in

And therefore a diesel on the back on the return when it was almost certain that a diesel would not have been needed in either direction under the original configuration. One way steam in the dark with a diesel on the back that will have it help a bit is not my idea of a day out.

The RTC has an impossible job. They've done what they can as no doubt has West Coast. But even a Class 5 is not a Class 8 and I presume that the off ECML route posed problems that there were not prepared to risk on haulage and timekeeping.

Depends whether they need to take the diesel back to Southall I guess or whether they can leave it at York or send it LE back to Carnforth. As the train returns to Ealing Broadway rather than Kings Cross they won't need a diesel for ECS moves.

I've pulled out of this trip now. More money down the drain. But a single journey in the dark with steam plus diesel is just too much. It's nobody's fault but this reliability of loco, NR route and gauging uncertainty etc etc is not good for the market.

I'd have gone for the ride and then drowned my sorrows in the Tap at York station. :)

Though rather disappointed about this (unless the diesel happens to be a 33!) I'm going anyway. It's not raining for a change and it's a good excuse to get out of the house and get some Christmas shopping done (Bah Humbug)

Please can anyone onboard advise which way round the train is currently formed? Is I.e.. standard class at the front or rear. I will be joining the return steam run from York this evening. Thanks. John
