Just out of interest, what would members of this forum like to see at our galas? I have recently joined the Gala Planning Team, so here is your chance to have your say.

I'm not just thinking in terms of locos, any sensible suggestions are welcome.

Please bear in mind that nobodys budget is infinite.

    Thanks,
    Seb

    @SebWelsh.

Good luck working with the Gala Planning Team. They’ve put on some great galas over the years.

I’d like to see the brake van rides return and would happily pay £20+ for a run along the entire line.

Good to see 92134 moving for the gala, would be a useful addition to the home fleet and a supportive gesture to allow that to happen.

    Small Prairie 5541

Maybe as this in late April, so longer sunlight hours, a 10/12/14 coach 9F BL-NF-MD-BL evening trip? Fish and Chips/Ale train etc

The NYMR GM has said the NYMR identified the need for a class 9 loco.

Any Locos such as the 9 from railways in the north, that are rare visitors to the SW,
Not steam but if you are talking diesel galas, a boness convoy would be nice.

convoys have worked well for SVR and swanage, might be worth trying to get a piece of that pie.

    Also

The silly double headers, can't these be knocked on the head,

7F with a pannier inside for example,Some effort to keep them prototypical would be appreciated.

A realistic timetable that can accomodate the odd unforeseen operational issue, not something that is so intense that the whole day falls apart at the first hiccup.
With a line as long as the WSR and some long intermediate sections this is I believe important. One of the lines gala USP's was the ability to run tender locos chimney first. Not just from a photographic standpoint but it makes, in my opinion, the passenger experience more realistic. Maybe the shuttle revenue is so beneficial that it is not possible now on a shuttle day, but if that is the case then think of how it may impact loadings and crowds on non shuttle gala days.

Should be able to combine both shuttle and turning of locos, it could be done if its wanted.

While we are on the case of Smokebox first etc,

Please post the allocations outside of a normally wrong program.

Even say a charge of £1 to access a webpage with them on would do,
or 50p on the day for a b&w a4 printout
Even if MHR and swanage give this away free.

For the Autumn Gala last year I received working timetables on A4 sheets as the programmes were late from printing. These A4 sheets were much more useful and practical to me and I would like to see these available again. I only buy the programme for the working timetables.

Might need to wait a few years until there are enough operational locos for a convoy... :)

Just an extreme example and an idea of how the wsr could make money by not spending alot, works well with steam too that little cally tank coming down with the costs spread across a few railways.

Want the wsr to thrive again, then hopefully the bitching stops

There's no need for them to do that. It's £3.50 or whatever. Seriously if people don't want to pay that then that's up to them. It's literally pennies. Can't even get a bus ticket from my house to Newport centre and back for that price. If you can't afford £3.50 and budget nearly 6 months in advance for that then sorry you have serious issues.

I didn't attend this year's ASG in the end, but I bought the programme to see what was going on and this formed part of my decision - along with the weather - on whether to attend or not. The railway gained some money from me, whereas by making it free online they wouldn't have got a penny. I did the same with the SVR ASG.

On the one hand you have people saying they want the WSR to thrive then others won't even pay £3.50 to know a loco roster.

I don’t think any comments on this thread have said they want then for free, even though some other railways do provide them free. In my case I’m having to buy a glossy programme which I don’t want and which may be inaccurate due to printing timescales. I’m not saying don’t produce them as I’m sure they’re welcomed by many. It’s a waste for me though. I just want an accurate working timetable which I’m happy to pay for.

Out of interest I wonder how many are printed, how many sold and the profit.

I'm quite happy to pay £3.50 for the programme and loco allocations, but I was a little bit put out after driving to BL (about a 90 minute round trip from where I was staying) on the Wednesday before the ASG especially to get a programme only to find they didn't have any. I gather they arrived on the last train of the day and some people were able to buy them.

I'm not sure if sending them on the last train was deliberate decision to essentially embargo the programmes until the Thursday or because they didn't arrive from the printers until Wednesday afternoon, but either way I suspect I wasn't the only person to be a bit annoyed about it. Perhaps something that can be kept in mind at next years SSG.

But to look on the bright side, my trip to BL wasn't entirely wasted as I found out, the hard way, about the roadworks mayhem at junction 22 and was able to plan an alternative route for the four days of the gala.

You are being obtuse, your talking about serious issues and you are twattling on about buses, get a grip.

Completely ignoring the fact that I've offered up other solutions

So you don't miss them again,

I will post them just for your benefit

1, If you purchase tickets online or over the phone , online gives you access to a webpage where the roster and timetable is homed, on the phone you get a copy posted with your ticket.

2 an option to pay say £1 to access said webpage or have it posted to you in the post 50p extra for other days.

3 forget the program model cause the rosters are normally wrong or missing information on facings of the locos and follow the mid hants and Swanage examples of posting them online on social media etc and 3a if people want to buy a program as well they can do either online or on the day.

Its all very well saying we've got 92220,6000 and mallard attending but if we have to pay a premium to find out what they are doing you are turning away not only enthusiasts but the general public who wouldn#t know that , you are over a barrel and have to pay upwards of £3 for something that's normally wrong.

The problem I can see is the beard and sandals brigade are happy to accept this where as if you tried this for a diesel gala, you would have either a riot or reduced attendance from.

I'm sure this is gonna upset you,but please don't bother replying because I'm not interested in your narrow minded trolling take it elsewhere, TIA

Exactly I'm not interested in a glossy book that might be wrong, neither am I asking for them for free..

5op a sheet of a4 so £2 for 4 days plus a stamp would surely make them more profit then a book

Ah, I see it is the WSR that has drawn the short straw this year to have the annual "why do they charge for a roster" toy / pram de-interface scenario...

    Tom

  20. Hardly throwing toys out the pram no one has said why do they or asked for it to be free.
