    Small update;

Andrew and myself carried on with a mornings work up at Church lane on wiring tracing, checks and maintenance on our own signalling department and then headed upto Rowsley

The Braithwaite water tank has been cranked out from the sidings with a view to getting it made working and erected at Rowsley to replace the current tank facility, early days yet and hopefully more on this project as it progresses

The same day the crane lifted several
Boilers out from the 280 and also Mr Civils industrial Loco so they can be worked upon and the tubes have been reinserted into the boiler of 5553, and are awaiting expanding into place

The class 25 is having a check over following its recent test run and I also called in on the Ashover Light Railway chaps who were busy getting the two extra points fitted into the new track layout, I also looked at the work on the vertical boilered steam Loco “Jaywick” whose flash boiler and motion unit has now been put into the chassis and a start on piping up has been made

That’s all for now till next week folks

Are those malleable iron pipe fittings I can see?

From what I understand and was told the fittings on the boiler Presently are the original bits. The boiler being high pressure having fittings that stand the pressure required and also straighter feeds to the motion reducing bends etcetera that you don’t want in the supply to the motion , it was talked about what fittings were needed etc but that’s a question best asked of the team themselves as they know far more about Jaywicks Previous life and how she was plumbed up several times

A quick measure up with Rod who has fabricated the fake chimney pipe up for Rowsley box and is on with the mounts for it now and also the public barrier for the upstairs area of the box ,

I ended up the day having a chat with David and his wife who were busy gardening and tidying up Darley Dale.

With the electrical jobs completed that were planned for this month and last the next electrical job on the list is to get rid of the battery fed track in the up loop at Datley and replace it with a power fed unit as the batteries are year by year getting more expensive , this shouldn’t be a big job as the power supply reaches the point loc and there’s enough room in the rear of the battery loc to mount the feed set and backup cell but it will mean running out about 200 feet of 2 core feed cable from the loc to the track ends , the other option which may also be the same amount of work is to run a power feed cable from the point loc to the next loc da6 and mount the feed n there then it can go onto the present fuses to the track ends but again it’s 200 feet of cable regardless

The chassis of 5224 continues to be needle gunned up and cleaned and the cabs on the class 25 are being worked on to finish off odd jobs, work continues upon the Shark brakevan retimbering and Mencap were busy working around the site too, work continues on a couple of carriages too with 1835 continuing to have its metalwork on the ends replaced and new sections welded in.

Finally it stopped raining at home time typical

Any news on whether Rowsley yard etc escaped the serious flooding that hit Rowsley. Services are obviously cancelled 10 Nov but how is the infrastructure?

    Hope all well.

BBC news posted this picture, you can see the railway under water north of Matlock, a bad situation, I don't know what damage there is yet, I expect Dom will update us.

I expect the narrow gauge and caravans at Rowsley might be affected.

You called sir . Indeed. Went down today with others to do an assessment of our various bits (mines signalling) the. Trackwork looks good in the flood zone, no movement, no displacement of ballast or of banking of sleepers or fittings and that’s thankfully with the wide valley bottom alongside letting the flow dissipate more before the choke point at the bridge

The bridge as most folks on the internet have already commented has had one of the cross braces underneath pulled from its clamp mounts, the brace is held on with four clamps each with three bolts and the bolts are ultimately the weak point and were never designed to have trees pushed against them and nine foot of flood water against that , they normally sit in mid air, when water permits the bridge will be inspected and the remaining tree detritus against the other cross brace cleared and the damaged brace repaired

No other damage noted. I had a treadle underwater which has survived , luckily the water ran off to the A6 side before the bRidge and the bridge itself is on a large skew angle and wide so that has helped massively against the water flow aT the choke point , as an example there’s hay bales about 8 foot up the trees at Riverside path so that shows the extent of the extra water, of course all that water has also flooded the shops and businesses in the town and park, the carpark opposite the premier inn had cars underwater so that’s a rough guess of four foot of water .

Elsewhere in the area the road along church lane is still shut as the wall has been brought down on the corner ( that’s why the valley base has either hedges or flood relief holes in all the drystone walls) and I’m told the road surface is torn up there too, it’s all still flooded around St Helens church and fields.

The only ones enjoying all this are the gulls in the fields enjoying their new lake

Apart from that we took the time while trains weren’t running to get on with some cable works round church lane for the track circuit works , when we can update more we will,

Caravans luckily were just high enough to make it, spoke to one of the owners today , so in a nutshell it doesn’t help when there’s a months worth of rain stuck in a holding pattern in the midlands unloaded in one go onto an already high river level from the previous weeks rain, a few locals also mentioned
A lot of water had been released from the dams up stream too, always a worry after the problems we had up Whaley bridge with Toddbrook reservoir

    S and t update first

John and myself continued today with the work Andrew and myself started last week, we’ve replaced the mains supply fuseholders for all the same entrelec types as the old ones were a mish mash of various designs and one had popped its sides , we also swapped over the track feed on tc2 from battery to mains feed and tested that , then disconnected the old

Limit of shunt wiring in the point loc and removed that tidying it up better before running the cable back into loc 6 and fitting the circuit for feeding this off the present power relay in the loc, this is waiting the cable running into two fuseholders and connecting to the positive and negative legs on the relay and the busbar next time to finish. The net result being the limit of shunt will only be lit once the cabins operational rather than on a timed circuit as before.

The last job of the day was to

Recover a bust drum of power cable from Rowsley shed and run this in and bury it from the box to the loc 3, thos will replace the present power cable from the box to the first loc cupboard as when last tested it was showing signs of needing to be replaced , unfortunately time and darkness were running out so that also will be swapped over next time, not an hard job

    Rowsley

Popped in very briefly to Rowsley , most folks were Avoiding the rain but Harvey was busying away, Andrew was cleaning down the frames on his industrial and over a quick brew was telling me the 2-8-0 has about half its tubes inserted now the rest due to go back in and be swaged (expanded), the Ashover gang were busy continuing with their trackwork alterations and Ben was having a chat about the BG that’s having bodywork and painting undertaken outside the shed as well as the work on his 6 wheeled milk tank now he’s gained the missing wheelset and fittings and all the work involved in getting that running ( somet I’m looking forward to that one )

Guests were then treated to a run up and down the sidings , there is still a bit of work on various things to complete her restoration but it’s good to see the old girl in a better state than when she was plinthed at the stone centre rusting away.

    Well done to all

If you look on mr Briddon’s website later he will likely have. a lot more details of the day.

No I do not currently volunteer
Onwards to the briddons yard at Darley Dale I expect, from the last blog on their site I believe RS8 conducted the last ever movements on the original quarry workshops metals (for the foreseeable future) and is the last loco to be outshopped from the original workshop too.

    Starting with Loco bits

The small prairie boiler work continues, the stays have been swaged in now and a trial fire lit to see where the leaks around the tubes are and these are slowly being narrowed down, steam was still coming off the boiler barrel in this mornings cold weather , work on the large prairie continues, minor work on the 25 continues and Andrews industrial has started to have its frames painted up in Indian Red, he tells me this was a common colour for NE locomotives frameworks.

The mencap gang braved the rain as did I and work on the rebuilding of the carriage ends on the RMB in the shed continues , the majority of rusted away framework is now out prior to the new bits getting welded back in and the north end refitted again.

I managed to fit the new treadle
At riverside totally in the rain (it stopped as soon as I finished) and also a few other wiring jobs too , Rod and Martyn fitted the new hat to the Rowsley box chimney and Rod has also manufactured up the viewing area box fencework for us which will get fitted next time.

The building work at the old quarry at the back of Riverside is well on with steelwork erection, it looks like the new houses will have quite a view from the lofty position

There isn't one..... I presume the reference is to PW's 2-8-0T 5224 or, less likely, his 6634.

I should really have just put 5553 . My usual faux pas is locos, descriptions and numbers, I’m not that good on things once they’re in a million bits . Pic attached of the boiler with its number on.

If you think that’s bad I’m even worse

You're not alone Dom, one visitor thought the boiler was from Jubilee 5553 Canada :)
