I’ve been expecting it for months but it just seems to be going a little far to suddenly insist that Number 9’s tour tomorrow has to have the Diesel on the front. It will be interesting to see the location of the diesel for the return of this tour; you could argue in these summer months all tours should run with a diesel on the back - but we all know what arguments that starts!

Not arguments but you don't increase the weight of a train by 119 tons in hot weather. Leave the steam locomotive on shed. You can still set fires from red hot coals dropping from the grate with a diesel on the front.

This is because my understanding is that when the motive power is the primary source of traction then it has to be on the front. So then it's a question of where you put the show pony. Logically that means behind the diesel as it's a support act.

How West Coast gets away with a diesel on the rear for 'occasional assistance' is their business. I presume that they argue it may only be for 'banking' purposes at the start and on hills and most of the time the steam loco is doing work.

You have to assume that tomorrow is not one of those instances and UoSA will be going more for the ride than to haul the train.

Do we know what has changed since last year when it was steam on the front with a diesel behind which from memory was how both WCRC and DBC operated various trips?

Common sense would tell anyone the driver of a diesel on the rear who can only see the back of a carriage shouldn't be allowed to be the prime motive power.

But they were not on the back, they were behind the steam loco (for some reason the system will not let me upload an image.

....and can't see ahead because they are looking at the rear of a tender. I expect that all the TOCs can do is follow the rules they are given by whomever is making them this year..

That's WNXX for you. I thought the stock arrived at Bristol around 2 pm?

My parents are planning on filming this tour tomorrow, does anyone know if 60009 is likely to be allowed to take the tour on the PDSR alone, i.e. Paignton to Kingswear?

Yet another over reaction by NR who can’t provide an all weather railway for every day use. A general ban due to the alleged sins of one loco. Disgraceful.

That was indeed No.9 and support coach.

33.025 has arrived at Basingstoke to rescue 47.245 & the 5Z25 Torbay Express stock. The train is now over 4 hours late.

Don't worry guys - Boris will sort it all out. He's been in the job 3 days and has already promised us HS3. I do feel however that he should have appointed Jacob Rees-Mogg as Minster for Transport as steam would then become the norm once more

It was there at 1710 then I changed from a Waterloo Exeter service onto a Down Manchester Bournemouth Voyager.
I just assumed it was waiting a path being the Basingstoke - Reading GWR shuttle service.

    Cheers, Neil

Not very likely. Didn't it have a diesel on the front on the PDSR on RTC's Dartmouth Express?

Ah but then we'd all have to ride on a plank in an open truck :(

This is a joke. What's the point in steam if the diesel has to be in front. Bad enough with a diesel tucked in behind but the diesel being in front is a whole different ball game. Thankfully in Scotland fire risk is less common but even so network rail always over react in some way or another.

Images from both loco movements this morning at Twyford

47245 first (I guess this is the loco that failed at Basingstoke)
