The NVR has not almost given up on its European image. The Swedish rail car is in regular use and its trailer car is making good progress and will before long join it in service. The Danish F Class no.656 could well be ready to run sometime in 2020 if all goes well. The Swedish 2-6-2T is nominally on overhaul but that is very long term due to funding. Emphasis at the moment is on the overhaul of 73050 and understandably so as it’s the loco that started it all back in the late 1960s. Most of the other locomotives of continental origin were privately owned and the owners disposed of them as they saw fit once they required an overhaul. The Swedish B class was bequeathed to the railway but I am unaware that funds were part of the bequest. I believe that the German class 64 is owned by the railway but is in need of a very expensive major overhaul. As with all projects it’s a matter of money and I’m sure the NVR would welcome a contribution towards costs of overhauling continental locomotives. As for volunteers not wanting to work on continental stuff, take a look at the small engine group on the railway, they are all over the Danish 0-6-0T like a rash and are very keen to see it back in service. And finally there is the Polish tank engine, albeit privately owned, due back on the railway later this year if stories are true

Goodness, what I could have done for the NVR and its fleet if it was me who won the £123m on the Euro Lottery yesterday... :(

I believe Ian's understanding is correct. In addition the various continental coaches come into their own during Santa Season, so 2hilst not headline grabbing, get plenty of use for part of the year. Over the past 10 years 8 have been overhauled using a mixture of paid staff, contractors and volunteers at a substantial 6 figure investment.

Getting 376 down for the return of the polish tank for a continental weekend would be great as far as I'm concerned, but the obvious question is whether the sums to transport the loco would add up.

I am glad to hear it. I am sure I had read in the past that the railway had decided to focus principally on its British stock going forward, but perhaps that is just another case of the railway press playing fast and loose with the facts. Certainly I wish them well with the restoration of the Danish tank, which is a charming engine.

I think my broader point about the narrow-mindedness of some enthusiasts still stands, though...

A relatively short while ago a GM, who didn't last long, wanted to market the NVR as a 1950s cross country line and was proposing the gradual replacement of the continental stock with UK stock to give at least two vacuum braked rakes to help him achieve his aim. That plan finished when a new GM replaced him. Should the NVR reach the point where ordinary service days require a two train service, they will need a mix of vacuum and air braked locos to match the UK and Continental stock so there will be a place for Continental locos. Quite look forward to seeing the Danish tank on a short(ish) DSB rake in the not too distant future.

I doubt some of the BR coaching stock stored in the tunnel could ever run again anyway... or am I being unkind? I'd love to see the carriage behind the 4-6-0 actually work as a push-pull carriage, but I believe it's not without its fair share of problems?

IIRC some of that is privately owned and that brings problems of its own.
