Good to see some of the excellent pictures taken during this very enjoyable tour. An interesting bit of trivia for you all - this was the first time that the B1 had been back to Scotland since it was built in Glasgow in 1948. She certainly acquitted herself well back in the land of her birth.

Forgive my ignorance but how did the differing train lengths work - was the Kyle an 'extra' that not all passengers could do?

And is the kitchen car still 1666 in the Steam Dreams set?

    Many thanks.

Were you firing on any of this tour? The B1 has clocked up a lot of miles lately, the last time I saw it before this was three miles from home on the WCML at Old Linslade. I did hear someone in the Grog mention that it was looking a bit dirty after touring half of Scotland and you would think they would make an effort to make it more presentable! Lucky for him I don't think any of the support crew were there.

I may be wrong but think Peter was firing on the Brora leg.

Guilty as charged, Henry. I was also on her on Thursday, Friday and Monday, but only as far as Perth. Had an easy day on Sunday as the morning guard to Kyle. As you can imagine I had a terrible few days!

To answer Steven's questions, both Kyle and Brora were some of several options open to tour participants - many went off on bus tours and rejoined to train elsewhere. The Inverness - Fort William leg was largely empty as many took other means and routes of travelling between the two. Kitchen Car 1666 is still in the Steam Dreams set.

Many thanks Peter - I have quite a few memories of 1666 from its time on the NYMR. It left with expectations that it would be stripped for spares and scrapped, so its new 'nationwide' career is good to hear of!

Each to their own I suppose but I can't see why anyone would want to book a steam tour and then take the bus! I'd want to grab every mile of steam haulage!

The thing is, a bus will take you to places that a train, steam hauled or otherwise, cannot reach. If these tours were aimed solely at steam enthusiasts they just would not happen. They are rightly targeted at a far wider audience to cover their costs and many, if not most, of these participants are there for much more than just a steam ride. They are not bothered about knocking seconds off the last record breaking run or if there is a diesel on the back. On a week plus tour such as this the train is only part of the experience and in this instance it was a means of seeing parts of the Highlands and Islands. Personally I'm just grateful that it is an excuse to run steam in some more unusual parts of the network and hopefully cover the costs as well.
