The black 5 is having to work hard there to push the A4 up the gradient, looks like the A4 has been included in the formation for whistle purposes only! :D

Yes the Plucky little Mixed traffic engine having to show the Lazy Overgrown Passenger lummox how its done .....Or perhaps the nasty crude gwr esque draughting on the Black 5 means it just makes more smoke and noise compared to the relatively more sophisticated and efficient A4 Front end ? :p

Having a great tour and good to meet members including
    45305, Paul42 & 30567.
It's remarkable how such a long complex tour comes together and full credit to how well RTC are looking after us.

There is an answer to this post but it would break forum rules and probably get me banned.
Looking on the bright side, at least the main line sections of GB XII have not been sullied with anything Green With Rivets. :p

I think Sam’s post is in context to today’s leg, not yesterday’s.

Looking at the loco exhausts on Shep’s excellent photos & many others of yesterday’s double-header it’s tempting to suggest that one of Sir William’s finest is pushing one of Sir Nigel’s racehorses and hauling 11 Mk 1’s into the bargain. I’m certainly not going there :D but I’d be interesting to know if any of the techy types have an explanation for the observed phenomena. My thoughts, for what they’re worth, are that (assuming both boilers are on the red mark) 1) The temperature of No 9’s exhaust is exhausting into fresh ambient air and is hotter due to higher boiler pressure (250psi vs 225psi), 2) Does No 9 have a higher degree of superheat? 3) No 9’s exhaust passes directly over the top of 44871’s chimney resulting in increased moisture content and associated reduced dew point locally which causes the condensation of the Black 5’s plume, hence it becomes visible.

It would have been interesting to see whether the effect was the same in a strong cross wind or if the effect is replicated tomorrow or Friday with the Black 5 and the B1. Anyone any thoughts?

Does anyone have any news about timings for tomorrow's train to Stranraer? I've checked RTT but don't see any wcrc trains through Girvan all day. Thanks in advance

N09 was making plenty of noise at Scout Green, she might of been eased off as she approached us at Salterwath.
