The Train Manager arranged a raffle on board the train for this young mans family, which at the last count on arrival in Carlisle had raised £1500 plus, and he thanked the generosity of the passengers. Well-done fellow passengers.

The 1st and 2nd prizes were donated, as far as I can remember, by West Coast Railway – for four premier seats on either the Dalesman or Scarborough trains, and the East Lancs Railway, for a similar prize, or on one of their dining trains, or a day’s footplate driving experience.

As the tickets were being drawn on the return leg of the journey, and I had to return by an earlier Virgin train, I gave my tickets to a fellow passenger sitting next to me – so I hope he won!

A couple of photos of the locomotives at Appleby, in immaculate condition, with the wreath and headboard on 44871.

Can someone provide an update as to who was driving the way back and who the rest of the crews were?

The only thing I can say with certainty is that drivers were Mr Blair on 44971 and Ian Riley on 45407, obviously with a second man. Stephen Shields was guard.
