Although there is a turntable at York and a triangle at Gascoigne Wood, there is nothing in RTT to suggest that either of the locos will be turned anywhere, and the schedule does not seem to allow sufficient time for that in any event. So presumably the locos will be tender-to-tender on the double-headed sections (apologies if this is stating the obvious). When was the last time a railtour was worked in this manner?

I can start the ball rolling with 21st September 1974 - 44932/4472 Carnforth to Ravenglass - but cannot recall anything since then. No doubt members with better memories than mine will be able to recall others, if there were any.

I think the trip may run as follows, from Carnforth both locos on front c/f. At Holgate lead loco drops to back and train proceeds to Northallerton Rev line (both locos still chimney first). Train reverses along Wensleydale line (top and tail both t/f). Train returns from Leyburn (top and tail both c/f). From the Rev line at Northallerton train heads to Gascoigne Wood (top and tail both t/f) - path timed at 45mph. The loco that led t/f along the ECML now detaches, runs round and attaches to the front of the other loco. The train now heads off towards Milford with two locos at the front (both c/f).

Ah, that makes sense! I hadn't spotted the 45 mph limit on the return. Thanks for cracking the riddle.

Are you saying that they are going to turn both engines at Gascoigne Wood Triangle on the return in 35 mins,as both engines are t/f when they arrive?

Once they have arrived, are they not chimney first for the next (last) stage of the journey? Turning not needed, just one engine running round to get back to double heading.

Yes but once past York they leave the ECML at Colton Junction to run through Church Fenton and they will be reversing once they have dropped down to Gascoigne Wood Loop.

Glad to be of assistance. In a seriously senior moment I nearly typed Chaloners Whin instead of Colton Junction for the train leaving the ECML! (Memories of a long time ago).
