0-6-0T RSH 7684/1951 is now apparently resident at GCR Loughborough. Haven't seen it myself, but a photo has appeared on FB.

Which means nothing really. It's been bought by the owner of 48305, 47406 & '68067'. Given that the latter is currently away on loan I think there's every chance this one will get loaned out as well when it's done, but at the same time it is quite suitable for the Mountsorrel branch.

LMS will be coming up this Tuesday to collect the new backhead from his sub-contractors, Newtons of Cromford. He also offered to collect the Chimney and blastpipe castings which require machining. This was a bit of a problem as these were in a very inaccessible area under Cemetery Lane Bridge and are very heavy. However, Team Faraday were prepared to help and also to lend a very capable wide wheeled sack barrow, so by one means and another the two castings have been brought into the car park. Many thanks, gentlemen. Other works on The Duke continue, but I wasn't able to attend on Saturday so I can't report further. Our brake van has had a body repaint and LMS lettering by Craig Hibbert and Phil Hutton. There are still some bits to finish off but it is looking very smart.

The latest Bagnall 00 wagon has arrived; another Will Hay spoof, "Buggleskelly Quarries Ltd". We know there was a quarry at Buggleskelly, as in the film the wagons were shunted over the edge. This implies a low level quarry and therefore the wagons bear the inscriptions "Sand And Gravel Supplies", and also "Not to be hump shunted".

I went down to see Dave Wright at LMS over the break; it was very good to see the progress on the boiler - lots of new stays in new plate. We had a very good discussion; a lot of the potential bottlenecks seem to have reasonably simple solutions:

Safety Valves: the balance of Dave's order for springs should arrive in January, we have ordered 2 plus 2 spares to be stored in grease. Dave has a pattern for the s.v. case, which is the bit which often gets frost damaged, I have ordered a spare. Dave will be glad to test the valves in due course. Simon has been busy machining parts in LG4 gunmetal.

Manifold: this was cast before Christmas and will be fettled ready for machining shortly.

Gauge Cocks: Dave will quote for the supply of a machined set.

Clacks: the existing clack bodies have been condemned - not enough meat left to machine. Dave has a pattern and will get a quote; manufacture of the other clack components is in hand.

Take off for ejector: the steel blank has arrived for machining.

    Tubes: due in January

Ashpan: kit of parts on shelf ready for assembly

    Smokebox: Outer wrapper formed

Clack/Injector pipes: Dave has very kindly run off a copy of the drawings.

Crinolines: Dave has also supplied a drawing for these, which are simpler than I thought they would be. However, one minor complication: the tank actially sits on two curved distance pieces which sit on top of the boiler, each around 12" long, 2" wide and with a slot in the top for the crinolines to pass through and keep them in place. One is around 1/2" thicker than the other because of the difference in size of the boiler barrel segments. I am not sure if we have these, but I bet Twiggs of Matlock could produce them. Twiggs have delivered steel bar for the crinolines this week.

I think it is going to be a busy year.

As publicized elsewhere, 'High-tech' Bagnall 401 is at the point of steaming and entering service. It was weighed and balanced by NYMR staff on Wednesday and has been steam tested for leaks and safety valves re-set. When run in yard it was pronounced to be 'running like a dream'. Let's hope we get many years use of it while we work on the next job list!

There was a lot of speculation from observers as to just how the crinolines would be bent to shape, I gather the general consensus was that we would never do it in-house and would have to send the steel bar stock out to contractors. I have always found it unwise to suggest to the 8F group that something cannot be done - I remember when someone told them they could not paint their engine red - and Mick Clarke turned up a few weeks ago with a very effective home made bar rolling machine, a sort of three roller mangle. Your stick the bar in, turn down the top screw and wind the handle. It makes a half crinoline hoop in about ten minutes. Mick used the LMS drawing to draw chalk circles on the shed floor for a template.

The shed was relatively quiet last Saturday, so Mick could draw his chalk circles and bend crinolines undisturbed. He and John Kirkman then set about drilling, tapping and countersinking the new components ready for assembly. I had been to Twiggs and pillaged their remaining "legacy" stocks of 1/2" short brass whitworth countersunk machine screws which will be used for assembly - we stand a reasonable chance of dismantling them in an orderly fashion in around ten years time. Simon Hunter has completed the machine work on the safety valves, which are ready for delivery to Loughborough, Tony Joyce and I have been cleaning and painting the cab which is starting to look a bit better, Mike Ball has been cleaning up vacuum connectors ready for fitting.

Down at Loughborough, Dave Wright has been chasing his suppliers for various castings. At least the first part of his order for safety valve springs has arrived, so I shall be taking the valve bodies down as soon as it can be arranged. His next job will be to turn the boiler on its side and to make and fit the crown stays, for which he does have the material.

The thick walled copper tubes for the injector steam pipes have arrived and will need to be bent to shape and fitted with flanges. The thin walled water delivery pipes have been bent up using stock in hand.

The new "Buggleskelly" 00 gauge wagons are still selling well. This doesn't pay the big bills but it certainly helps with the everyday running expenses.

Meanwhile the S & T fairy has been leaving small but significant items at my back door which I shall bring down to the railway to keep the peace.

Mike Pearce’s 18” Hunslet 1873 ‘Jessie’ will be moving to a new home at the Pontypool & Blaenavon Railway. The loco should arrive before Easter after receiving attention to the bottom end and being converted back to a saddle tank at the Barry Tourist Railway.

The safety valves are now with LMS for testing. The boiler is now on its side, very nearly all the side stays have been fitted and are being rivetted over. About half the crown stays have been made, the remains of the old stays are being very carefully removed from the outer wrapper. The crinolines have been fitted with their distance pegs, painted with aluminium primer and carefully stored away. Cleaning and painting of the saddletank and cab continues. The front window frames have been glazed and are ready to fit. We have just been donated two sets of steam heat hose fittings, so the new hoses can be fitted.

    Hunslet 3193

A great cause for celebration today! Our Hunslet Austerity No.3193 gained its boiler ticket with flying colours. We just had to adjust the second safety valve slightly so that it operates at the correct pressure. We can now run the engine in public, so its first appearance will be at the Bressingham Heritage Steam Gala to be held between Saturday 4th May (our official launch) and Monday 6th. To celebrate, we took the loco for a few trips up and down the running line!

Congratulations to the 3193 team. We continue to plod along at Wirksworth. Not much news from Loughborough on the boiler, but the new backhead has been marked out for drilling and some other preparation work has been done. We are assured that intensive work will start shortly. Meanwhile various minor jobs are in hand; the cab has been cleaned down to bare metal throughout and the inside painted in dark grey and cream. Cleaning and painting of the saddle tank has resumed with better weather. The new vacuum pipes and their fittings are now in place, steam heat to follow.

Does anyone have a firehole protector ring for an Austerity tank or a casting pattern or know where to get one please?

You could try the KESR. I don't know that they have these but they seem to have quite a bit for Austerities.

Conservation work on Manning Wardle No 2015 is progressing. the locomotive lost one pair of its original Manning Wardle buffers some time around 1960, judging by photographic evidence. The whereabouts of a pair of available replacements of the original pattern would be of much interest. The overhaul to restore the loco to steamable condition wont start until MW No2009 is complete, but there are parts to be sourced to enable it.

I drove down to Loughborough on Wednesday and found that David Wright and LMS had been busy; finally we have a sound manifold casting which has been fully machined ready to fit. Most of the old crown stays have been shelled out, manufacture of the new ones will start shortly. The new boiler backhead has been further trimmed in preparation for fitting, and has pilot stay holes drilled. The steel boiler plate strip which is to join the backhead to the side sheets has been cut and sent for forming. Mick Clarke, John Kirkman and Simon Hunter have been pressure testing the steam heat and other minor components on air as an initial step before formal testing after the pipework is reassembled. Unfortunately when they came to examine the main steam pipe it was worn tinplate thin and cracked, beyond repair. This is a great ? shaped lump of thick copper pipe, about 5" diameter, so the question was where on earth could we source a replacement?

On Sunday morning I ran into David Wright himself, who was on the footlplate, so I asked him. He is quite familiar with the ? pipe and keeps thick copper pipe in stock, so he ought to be able to sort us out.

More good reports from Loughborough. The crown stay holes in the outer firebox wrapper have all been cleaned up, any defects found in the process have been welded up. The inner copper box has been gently and uniformly jacked down to the correct position to remove the damage caused in the past by over rolling of tube ends. All the holes have been re-tapped and three rows of crown stays fitted.
