I assume looking ahead into 2019 shouldn’t be any need to hire anything in?

2253's boiler has passed its steam test, so I'd have thought there's a good chance it will be finished by Easter, unless it goes elsewhere for trials and running in.

It went back yesterday, Anthony. There's footage on YouTube of Allelys taking her away.

They will know, the DSR is not backward when it comes to publicity. ;)

Getting good local publicity it seems. Friends (adults and youngsters) travelled yesterday and said it was fantastic - great fun for the children. They also said that yesterdays trains were fully booked, which is good news for the line.

Great video and I am sure you found it well worth the journey to see it. The reflections on the river and embankments add a extra dramatic effect to it.
It has been a great success it appears, as all tickets for all the journeys have sold out. More interest than Santa it seems. :D I expect some other lines will copy the theme next year.

  17. Thank you. Yes it was well worth it. I travelled on board on Tuesday and returned Thursday to lineside both trips. Spectacular even in the freezing temperature! It may well appear elsewhere next Winter. I shouldnt be at all surprised!

Thanks for sharing. For an authentic recreation of the golden years, this scores precisely 0 out of 10, but for a really imaginative, visually stunning, completely different approach to encourage people to take a train ride on a dark winter evening, I'd give it 10+ out of 10. What a superb initiative by the DSR and I am not surprised that it has proved a great success. I'm sure Evening Star92220 is correct - if there are no copyright issues, other lines will want to follow suit.

Is it just a train ride, with the light show / enchanted forest, or is there some activities on board as well? Looks a lot like Blackpool Illuminations from what I've seen so far!

  20. I dont think you can call it just a train ride. There is a lit up Deltic on the front leaving Paignton and Standard 4 Braveheart lit up at the rear. The carriage lights are spectacular, and lights shining out from them light up the lineside and forestry. There are displays from Churston down to Kingswear, and its snowing at Churston! Going through Greenway Tunnel with all the lights is especially magical. The carriages are well decorated and cosy and there are refreshments on board. No I don't think I'd call it 'just' a rain ride! :)
