No intel other than it’ll be one of the locos that’s in the pool. So by process of elimination that’ll be 60009?

As promised I attach a summary log of Clan Line's eastbound climb to Whiteball on 03/06/2018 with load 12, with a comparison to 60009 back in 1995 on load 11.

Clan Line had the benefit of a non-stop run through St Davids, whereas No. 9 had to start cold from the back platform and took a short while to get going. No.9 had the edge in speed after Hele & Bradninch crossing.

My 1995 log was timed to the mileposts, without the benefit of GPS! I have interpolated the passing times in italics to make it easier to compare with Clan Line's trip last Sunday.

I reckon Clan Line averaged 1,820 edhp all the way from Cowley Bridge Jn to Whiteball, which increased to 2,085 edhp for the last couple of miles and so a tad more than the 2,020 edhp I calculated for 60009 back in 1995.

Power outputs for Clan Line on the return:-
    Greenway 1,250 edhp
    Torre 1,623 edhp
Whiteball (from Cowley Bri) 1,821 edhp
Whiteball (from Hele LC) 1,867 edhp
Whiteball (from Tiverton P) 2,068 edhp
    Whiteball (from Pugham) 2,086 edhp
    Somerton 1,441 edhp
Brewham - ruined by signal check.

Thanks Henry, great end to a wonderful day with 7827 pounding up and down, and the Torbay Airshow to boot!

Any idea what will be rostered for the 19th August outing via Westbury? As far as the current pool is concerned, it would appear that Tornado will be finishing a a late shift on the previous evening in Manchester with the Bard of Avon, while No.9 will be back in London after its outing to the West Somerset Railway on the Saturday. So that just leaves Merchant 28 if 8P is going to be the order of the day. But I'm not sure its right to just assume that by process of elimination it will be available because there may be other factors that will govern its ability to put in an appearance. Any further news from MNLPS or elsewhere on this as yet?

Unless 60009 only works down on the Saturday and goes LE to Bristol

Yes, that would certainly be an efficient and logical way to manage No 9's weekend itinerary if indeed it is pencilled in for the Sunday Torbay Express. But I do think that if that is how the scenario materialises, I would be very disappointed as an RTC customer to be on the losing end of what looks like an unambiguous copy-and-paste promise of steam haulage on the return that is contained in the body copy of RTC's website blurb. And especially so if this was the chance that I had taken to say a fond farewell to No.9 on the main line.

So Clan Line wasn't even near flat-out on the run up to Whiteball Summit? Makes you wonder what she could do with a full free rein being given, especially on the steeper westbound - water taken at Westbury, flat chat through Taunton, balls to the wall up Wellington and let 'er rip down the bank to Exeter...

All I can say is I look forward to the day when the veteran Clan Line gets to square off against her unrebuilt classmate GSN in the SW... I at least hope to be around to see it, even if some of you doubt it'll happen in your lifetimes! ;-)

36% cut off with full or nearly full regulator isn't far off 'flat out' In the days of steam 40% was regarded as about the maximum to be used before it becomes counter productive. See the next Heritage Railway for full details of 3rd June and other recent MN performances.

Yet a heck of a lot more cut-off is used for starting a train? 85% is the usual figure I see quoted... I was also looking at the dbhp figures, not just cut-off!

Obviously yes. I meant at speed. The EDBH/IHP was high and approaching the best levels recorded in the 1960s.

We were told on yesterday's spectacular Cornishman Express that the remaining Torbays will be hauled by:
    No.9: 15th July; 29th July; 19/8
    Tornado: 2/9; 16/9.
Interestingly it was implied from a very reliable source that the Cornishman Express itinerary was not a one off. So watch for further announcements from TBEL.

This is mysterious. Had a letter from TBE - the 16th September's TBEL has been cancelled as there's no guaranteed locomotive.

Isn't Tornado available ? I can't see it booked on anything after it's Bham - Plymouth trip.

Hence the mysterious comment...thought it was staying down to do the TBE as well.

The 16th September train has disappeared from the TBEL website.
    Remaining dates of operation are:
    15/7 and 19/8 via Westbury
    29/7 and 2/9 via W-S-M. <BJ>

It may be that Tonka will not make its main-line commitments for some time to come. I'd imagine they'd prefer to run it in gently after the motion rebuild...
