Another english company sold to the Americans then. Even so it could still be a unique turntable or one of their last surviving then, would be another interesting record to hold eh!

It would seem that most of their products were allied to the agricultural business but how a turntable falls into that category is beyond me but another example of a manufacturing country going to the dogs.

Speaking of turntables reminds that there was once a table at Kingswear capable of accommodating King 4-6-0s. By the late 1960s the pit was full of rubble but I have so far been unable to locate further details, notably when it was last used by BR and when the table itself was removed - probably cut up on site for scrap (ouch).
The site is now a car park.

Apparently the said turntable was extended from 23ft 5ins to 55ft 8 ins in 1900 and then to 66ft in 1928. It was removed in 1966, with the wharf closing on 4 may 1964 and traffic ceasing on 14th June 1965. Goods traffic started here almost 100 years earlier on 2nd April 1866

I can post a nice pic of the Earl of Berkeley reversing off of the said turntable too if you like.

Predictable I guess. Something different - for variety would have been good. Oh well....

Also we can wait for someone to mistake them as I'm sure it will be quite easy from a distance especially seeing pics of them together

Ransomes, Sims & Jefferies also built lightweight steam traction engines, often supplied to private estates for haulage work.

I'm sure I've seen the name Ransomes on old lawn mowers too.

Didn't Ransomes Rapier also build steam cranes for the railways? In which case maybe turntable construction was a logical step.

Oh I don't know about David they do like to be different at may do it differently as its expected?? Will just have to wait and see.

The turntable is still a turntable although the crane could be their last surviving crane so the MHR would have a record too then

That would fill a vacant spot I spose, although saying that 4588 Trojan was still carrying her nameplate during the heritage weekend.

Although I supose they won't need to carry it far to fit and save the cost of getting a new one, but surely to be fair 4588 should leave first

sorry to say but 4277 WILL carry a name. but not david, or trojan, or braveheart. you will see soon. As a preservationist it does hurt that we have to put names on, being forced by ,anagement and also by the passengers. Maybe less than 1% of our passengers note our engines because of the number. The rest look at them for the name and recognise them for the name. The same applies for the coaches. And with a commercial railway the money does a lot of the talking....and puts food on my plate.

I wondered that as obviously they don't usually go back to names they've already had and didn't think they would want to be predictable as thats no fun and doesn't create any interest.

You are totally right about the customers recognising the names rather than the numbers as you can always tell the tourist from the enthusiast (or usually). Last time I was on the PDSR there were two familys At Paignton talking to each other and one guy said I last saw Goliath when I was ten.

I also tink it's a unique touch which again makes the PDSR different to everyone else and I must say I used to ask mum to go and see Goliath when I was about 8 or 9 every time we went to Paignton (In fact I still do, although visit more often by myself these days) and so it appeals to the children more than numbers as well.

OK, accepting the fact that it WILL have a name, have the Management considered a naming competiion for local kids? a bit like the poster comp. Could run it in the herald express and/or via local primary schools. Would be good publicity, and the prize for the winner could even be a footplate ride! Might be too late, but only just thought of it.

Unlikely, as 4588 carried that name. My guess is another macho name such as "Titan". Something that represents size or strength.
