Not sure about the 'too hot to touch. Looks suspiciously like part of the inside valve motion? Just an awful day for the Trust, the Pax and possibly the future of higher speeds for the steam movement in general, dependent upon the results of the ensuing investigations.

Yes, I do rather hope that this was caused by some outside (non organic) factor, as otherwise I would suggest that our two miles at 90mph might be the last seen on these shores.

Apocryphal comment from someone with the surname Benn who allegedly said he would be happy with one 90 today - looks like you got your wish sir, but clearly not quite what you had in mind. Fairly depressed air in this coach that is not hopeful for more than 75 in the future

Not sure what your complaining about.
On a train of air-con mk2’s the only hint you have that it’s a steam loco on the front is the odd whisp of steam, you can’t hear or see (forget stand by a window) on a railtour.

You’ve paid for a charter train day trip to York behind slower than average traction. That the traction has failed and is delayed your only complaint is that it’s delayed giving you less time in York, but with a 100mph 67 and less need for stops it could recover some time.

If anything you should consider your getting multiple types of haulage today. Pity 55002 isn’t an option to get you home tonight.

Before berating the A1ST too much consider this is a railtour run by a loco where the money is going towards the loco, not a full time business making profit out of a volunteer run loco. Other companies can just abandon it and use another engine and leave the group with the costs to fix it ready for next time. A1ST is quite clear.. it’s all about and in aim of the loco and i’m Quite sure they are very concerned and upset right now.

Don’t forget to enjoy quaff lunch, dinner and chug the wine.. you paid for that too, ps don’t choke on the quails while reading this...

Some horrendous delays to passenger services. This will cause thousands of minutes of delays for the rest of the day now.
Station announcers at York are announcing delays on the Edinburgh due to a “luxury steam train breaking down”.. you can only wonder what delayed passengers at York think of that.

B1 in LNER black at the back behind 48151 looked great this morning. Also saw 47245 heading north on an S&C railtour.

I am calm and mellow now.

Can't do vino, have to drive later and as for quail? No ta!

Like others, I do hope this doesn't bring 90mph running to an end before it has started.

Still, it did 90... "but just for one day".

Is the NVR on standby for a visitor?

    Cherish it.

Weather is grey & cloudy in York so your not missing the sun. In the absence of a Tornado i’m Going to take a stroll round the walls.

Yes, I've noticed that too. I thought the generator car would have taken care of that?

Funnily enough, the sun has come out as we make our languid progress towards St. Neots...!

Apropos of the station announcements: not the first time I've heard that. Once heard it on a commute home where it was emphasised that we were delayed due to a 'vintage steam train setting fire to an embankment'...

Now we lnow what has happened to Tornado this really is incredibly sad for the A1ST and apart from @The Green Howards I think everyone understand that sadness.

Virgin will allow charter tickets back to KGX from PBO so everything has been done that can be done.

Think we need some perspective here. If the initial reports are correct and the loco hit something, (or even a catastrophic failure) then the potential consequences are not worth thinking about. Nobody has been hurt. My commiserations are with the A1 trust and the crew, who must all be very shaken. I hope the cause and a repair can be identified swiftly, but until then we should support and not speculate. Let us not forget the loco has passed a test in which she hit 100mph and cruised for miles at high speed - she also has had a bottom end overhaul and has been in fine condition. These things can happen, but are fortunately rare.
