All Our Yesterdays – 50 Years Ago – January 1968

With first generation diesel locomotive building virtually complete this month would see a further locomotive from the final batch of Class 20’s and two Class 50’s delivered.

    New Locomotives
    Class 20 – D8319
    Class 50 – D403/05

The next ten years or so will be dominated by a mix of locomotive modifications and the withdrawal of the more un-successful or “non standard” types. The main programme of modification this month was Doncaster Works undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine.

    D5545/47/72, D5615/72/79, D5836/53

Steam withdrawals in the month decreased from eighty two to thirty one. With the remaining steam fleet being made up of Stanier Black Fives, Stanier 8F’s and BR Standards these types would now form the basis of the monthly withdrawals. The slaughter of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet continued with eleven locomotives condemned. There was a pause in the non standard or unreliable main line diesel fleet condemnations this month. At least two of the steam withdrawals survived breaking up and entered preservation.

With first generation diesel locomotive building virtually complete this month would see the final four locomotives from the final batch of Class 20’s and another Class 50 delivered.

    New Locomotives
    Class 20 – D8324/25/26/27
    Class 50 – D410

The next ten years or so will be dominated by a mix of locomotive modifications and the withdrawal of the more un-successful or “non standard” types. The main programme of modification this month was Doncaster Works undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine.

    D5558/82, D5839/60

Steam withdrawals in the month decreased from thirty one to twenty. With the dwindling steam fleet being made up of Stanier Black Fives, Stanier 8F’s and BR Standards these types would now form the basis of the monthly withdrawals. The slaughter of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet continued with renewed vigour with thirty three locomotives condemned. The pause in the non standard or unreliable main line diesel fleet condemnations continued this month with just one locomotive condemned.

Steam withdrawals in the month increased from twenty to sixty three. With the dwindling steam fleet being made up of Stanier Black Fives, Stanier 8F’s and BR Standards these types would now form the basis of the monthly withdrawals with the Stanier 8F’s being hit hard this month with thirty three condemned.. The slaughter of the small or non-standard diesel shunter fleet slowed again with only seven locomotives condemned. However the pause in the non standard or unreliable main line diesel fleet condemnations ended with three Class 14, one Class 15 and two Class 22 locomotives condemned. The three Class 14 locomotives had been in service for less than four years.

With first generation diesel locomotive building virtually complete this month would see four Class 50 locomotives delivered.

    New Locomotives
    Class 50 – D441/43/44/45

The next nine years or so will be dominated by a mix of locomotive modifications and the withdrawal of the more un-successful or “non standard” types. The main programme of modification this month was Doncaster Works undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine.

    D5503/08/17/83, D5655

With the main line steam now all withdrawn attention now focused on the small or non-standard diesel shunter and the non standard or unreliable main line diesel fleets. Shunter condemnations remained steady at fifteen and main line diesel condemnations decreased slightly from thirty seven to thirty five. This month British Rail decided it had had enough of the Clayton Type 1 (Class 17), introduced only six years earlier as a replacement for the English Electric Type 1 (Class 20) and condemned twenty one of the class, with the youngest, D8611 having only been in traffic for three years, nine months. Also condemned this month were five Class 14’s, three BTH Class 15’s, one North British Class 22’s, one English Electric “Baby Deltic” Class 23, one BR Type 2 Class 24, and two Warship Class 42’s. Finally seven electric locomotives were condemned, one Class 70 and the six EM2 Class 77’s, later to be sold to Holland. At least one of the October withdrawals has escaped being broken up, EM2 Class 77 E27000

All Our Yesterdays – 50 Years Ago – November 1968

With first generation diesel locomotive building virtually complete this month would see two Class 50 locomotives delivered.

    New Locomotives
    Class 50 – D446/47

The next nine years or so will be dominated by a mix of locomotive modifications and the withdrawal of the more un-successful or “non standard” types. The main programme of modification this month was Doncaster Works undertaking replacement of the unreliable Mirrlees JVS12T 1250bhp engine in the Brush Type 2 fleet with a 1470bhp English Electric 12SVT engine.

    D5504/05/35/54, D5657/95

With the main line steam now all withdrawn attention now focused on the small or non-standard diesel shunter and the non standard or unreliable main line diesel fleets. Shunter condemnations decreased from fifteen to ten and main line diesel condemnations decreased from thirty five to only seven. Condemned this month were two Class 14’s, two Class 17 Clayton type 1’s, two North British Class 22’s and one accident damaged Class 33 BRCW type 3. Finally an accident damaged Class 81 AL1 AC electric locomotives was condemned. At least one of the November withdrawals has escaped being broken up, Class 14 D9526
