Whatever other opinions one might have about building a County, at least one can rejoice that no-one will want to paint the poor thing in BR lined black...

If they had lasted to nationalisation they probably would still have been green, after all 1400s and prairies were!

No debate. Works grey, followed by green. End of. ;)

Which is slightly disappointing as you've normally been able to rely on RM to wait for the correct moment.

Maybe it'll ring home when those of us at the sharp end are less-willing to share details of latest news, save risking any key negotiations.

Ah, but if its a straight frames County with steam braking on the engine it could be painted in pre 1906 style with three lining panels on the Tender, the entwined monogram and indian red frames... Or alternatively there's WW1 unlined green...

Is this the HR influence rearing its ugly head? If so, then it's a retrograde step for The RM; one that might make subscribers think again, as if it moves away from being "The Journal of Record" then it becomes just another "Shock, horror, scoop" rival to the other magazines, and as such might well lose sales.

If you look at RM Steam section, its influence has more history with the other prominent magazine of the hobby...
It's a shame to be talking of RM like this, but 2x big projects in a month being opened to the public before all the "i" are dotted and "t" crossed. Yet some of us will still be quizzed, why didn't you respond to my e-mail/call..?

Definitely a shame, but perhaps it was inevitable once Mortons got their hands on it that this might well happen.

Actually got round to finally reading the GWS Echo this afternoon, a few weeks after it arrived (it got lost in an office move) and that suggested that the project would be formally announced in the RM which came out shortly after the Echo...

Edited as it was actually the RM that the GWS were expecting to publicise in their Feb edition, so the story in RM that is much mentioned here was no surprise to them....

Given that the deputy editor of RM is one of the people at the sharp end of this project, I would think that he, more than most, would be fully aware of what is going on and when it is the correct time to publicise the project.

Not with an extended smokebox and top feed you can't. It's the 3440 or 3717 dilemma again.

Not having read any of the announcements, are they planning to address the mechanical shortcomings of the County class ? Presumably some modernisation will be planned ?
