Wonder what will head the Pennine Limited 3rd March given 3 potential candidates are appearing at the ELR gala that weekend? By a process of elimination 45699, 48151 ...... ? Get the impression the red one is in for a busy winter / spring.

For the Whitby trips the website and the brochure state 61264 and either 45690 Leander or 45699 Galatea.

Friends in Whitby tell me that the crossing loop at Glaisdale was taken out of use a couple of weeks ago following damage to pointwork. The line was reopened but with all trains using the downside platform..

Network Rail have said the loop is to be restored to use, but I haven't seen a timescale anywhere. Whilst the normal DMU service is unaffected I would have thought the tour will need to use it.

Certainly did last year going to Whitby, not coming back.

Question--- can you cross at Grosmont? If so, maybe running twenty minutes earlier than last year to reach Grosmont at 1230 might just be feasible?

And if I recall corrctly, you can't access Whitby-Grosmont (or vice versa) unless Grosmont-Glaisdale is clear. The block section is Whitby-Glaisdale. Quite how this is affected with the loop at Glaisdale temporarily out of use is another question. I'm sure that someone will be along soon to let us know :)

To answer my own question a reliable source says NR intend to repair Glaisdale loop on March 17th.

That's good. I see the 7 April trip from London is fully booked.

Did NR say which year?. I base that comment on their sparking success at electrification on the GWR mainline!

Not a good start to the year when even the 'one-offs' aren't filling.

I agree, I really hope the Saphos half-price deals have not started a "race to the bottom" price-wise. SD have been heavily discounting also, if slightly more discreetly. Even now, unless it was something really special, I would be tempted to hang on for a discount before booking with RTC and SD. The medium/long term prospects for steam could be disastrous, if enough people are not prepared to book at the full price.

I doubt it would start a 'race to the bottom' as this 12 month limited offer would probably cause their competition no more than a lean, or very lean year profit wise and maybe a handful of cancellations due to insufficient interest, personally I have booked only a 'Welsh Marches', there are no more Saphos trips planned this year but, probably another eight with other tour companies, due to the limited Saphos programme on offer.

It really depends what the margins are like, but goes against the general market orthodoxies that competition is good for cusromers if it results in less choice, ultimately.

Surely, only for the duration of the 50% offer.

But at least they are both running. Last year the spring Buxton ran but the Tin Bath was cancelled I think for low bookings.

Saphos has everything to prove of course and it really depends on whether a critical mass of custom has already been reached as to whether there is new business to be won or if the existing market will simply divide.

Well I'm on one of their trips but I wouldn't have touched it at full price.

Ditto, my first mainline trip since the window hanging ban came in and I’m only doing it because of the price.

One of the two proposed Buxton was cancelled last year. The problem is trying to run two trips with similar pick-ups two weeks apart ( last year it was 3 over 4 weeks). While the Whitby trip from York last year I believe was fully booked , this years trip from London is fully booked, and the other one which starts in Skipton has only 4 seats in standard, 5 in first and 47 places in dining.
