Utter nonsense... Imagine Buckingham Palace, Eiffel Tower, Niagara Falls suing tourists for taking photos.... If I take a photo of a loco, are you suggesting the copyright belongs to the loco owner?

In the days when I lived at the northern outpost of the GWR (Birkenhead) we had a coal man, and he delivered 10 sacks of anthracite and 10 sacks of some other coal. The anthracite was hard and shiny... but the other coal was dull and matt. My mother used to start the fires in the house using the matt stuff, but would use the anthracite once the fires were fully lit. What that says about anthracite, I do not know....other than the anthracite sat there and glowed for hours.

Reminds me of a course I was sent on when working. Entitled "Timekeeping". It started at 9am, so I left my local station shortly after 7am to arrive by 8am.... we sat outside Liverpool Street station for an hour (signal or points failure). When I arrived at the course, the lecturer was on the phone to my boss at 09:10 saying I hadn't arrived!

  8. It is a curious document, for sure, and I admit I have read and re-read some sections over and over again as I couldn't quite understand (but some might say that is typical of someone who struggled at QEGS, Wimborne ;) ) but - and this is the reason for this reply - isn't it a lot better to have a document to read (and follow up queries using the contact details provided) than no document at all?

Thanks for the kind comments about my small efforts but I humbly suggest most applause be given to the valued contributors like the many folks at the Plc, the WSRA, the Trust and a great many volunteers and photographers (over 1000* photographers in 2011 when last I counted) who keep me well supplied.

    Steve

    * I am next on the Railway for the Autumn Gala and, for the 20th birthday of wsr.org.uk I am considering a repeat of the 2011 'shoot the photographers' event.

I'm not sure what you mean by curious! If there's bits you don't understand, just let me know.

It ought to morally. Your photo would not be possible without tireless efforts to save, restore and maintain said loco by previous and current dedicated folk!

Oh dear. I read your post and thought now what's wrong ? I then read the summary and the word 'curious' came to my mind also !

I can assure you that Mr Maw was indeed present at the referred to budget discussions ( or else the most realistic even 'curious' card board cut out ever :)

Does not placing the 'Heritage Committee' within WSSRT's orbit make sense ?

The possibility of a high profile event in September has been considered and discussed to my knowledge since last October. Sorry it has only just come to your attention.

As for the later 'Alice' reference "Yorkshireman", I think that's probably unworthy. Certainly reading the document that is not how I read it. 'Cautious perhaps', but then considering recent history that perhaps seems appropriate ?

I note the Chairman has responded. When the Chairman is saying effectively "if you do not understand/like then contact me" perhaps that should be the initial route for any misgivings not a public website ?

As West Somerset Wizard says surely it is better to be informed than not ? (with or without any purported grammatical limitations)

Yesterday we had a quick photo shoot on the WSR in order to get some photos to market the Military train and display during the March Spring Steam Gala and the 1940's Weekend on the 15/16th September. One photo is below and www.wsr.org.uk kindly has a report with more photos.

    Ian

    Thank you.

One small bit. We seem to have an instance of ‘immaculate conception’ (those under 14 or of a non-religious upbringinging please refer to Google) in that Richard Maw and Paul Conibeare used to be ‘Associate Directors’ and are now full Directors without, apparently, a stage in between.

That decision will be, in at least one case, be ‘not without controversy’, and might, if an uncharitable view were to be taken, be thought to have been ‘ducked’ in the way the document has been drafted.

Had I missed an announcement? If so, I apologise. In any event, perhaps you might care to explain the logic.

No, not much. If (1) we claim to be a Heritage Railway and (2) the WSR plc seeks to be lead body, then ‘heritage’ sgould He central to what it does.

Had that been so, we might not still have ‘sign-Gate’ to resolve.

It hasn’t only just come to my attention. I recall that an one point last year another large loco was being said to be ‘essential’ For the FS event - until one could not be secured.

But whether it comes to my attention does not matter - it is the public that matter. It has been suggested to me that this ‘event’ is relied on for a 6-figure contribution to this year’s budget. This time last year we had public ‘champing’ at the Bit’ to buy FS tickets. As we stand, there is no announced event, no specified loco, and the sums I have heard bandidied around seem to be ‘pie in the sky’.

But I look forward to being wrong.

The AIW comment was my, obviously misjudged, attempted humourous reference to the use of the word "Curious" by Robin. Sorry you were offended by it.

Yorkshireman asked for details of the EU directive, but I have seen none given. I have checked a UK Government
website regarding copyright. It said this:-

Copyright Notice: digital images, photographs and the internet
Copyright Notice Number: 1/2014 Updated: November 2015

I want to take photos of sculptures and buildings located in public spaces
You do not need permission to photograph buildings, sculptures and similar works on public display in
public spaces. The photographs you take are afforded full copyright protection. This means you, as the
photographer, are able to commercially use your work.

    I think that's pretty clear.

Since nobody else replied, there is a concept called "freedom of panorama" which protects photos taken in public spaces.
There were a lot of concerns that this was not adequately protected by the recent revision to EU copyright law. Google can find loads of references to this but here is one example - https://www.communia-association.org/2016/12/19/eu-copyright-protect-photography-public-spaces/ .

I don't know how things ended up & whether the EU directive was modified after that article was written.

So the concerns about the EU directive are not fake news.
