    "From memory 5051 was through piped for such an eventuality, I assume that if the train is air braked the air loco has to be on the front and thus Tornado would have to lead should 61306 be piped for such an eventuality?"

    Yes, 5029 was pilot and 5051 was train engine but I was told that the brakes were actually controlled from 5029.

    The driver of the lead loco must have control of the train brake. Either loco might provide the pump to compress or expel the air from the train's brake pipes, depending on how they're all connected. There's probably half a dozen variations, and has been discussed in other threads on here at great length by people far more knowledgeable than me.

    Anyway, this has almost nothing to do with the OP's question... ;-)
