Huh, that's really interesting. What is the impediment to returning No 49 to steam? Other than cash obviously...

The Highlander is another personal favourite, and what I wouldn't give to see it run out on the Alford branch...or perhaps more likely, out of Crathes in to Banchory in the not so distant future.

The impediments are permission from the owner, cash and who would do the work. GCC own the loco, so an approach would need to be made. Cash would need to be raised, but if Steam Railway helped push it, it would give a healthy kick start. Who would do the work, well that is the awkward one. If you split the work up between Bo'ness and Strathspey - if and only if they had the capacity, then it could be game on. The works are not thought to be major, although you wont know until you detube the boiler. That said, the firebox looked as if it was new and reports suggest Inverurie works treated it like a pet, so she may not need too much... A joint approach between the SRPS and Strathspey would be a good way of bringing the loco back to life and fostering yet more co-operation - the loco would be ideal for both lines and could do a few runs at the KDR and Brechin - she could always pay a trip to the Bluebell as well. Not the first Scottish loco to make it there (123 and 419). She would be an ideal project for the whole country... (as well as looking stunning and being a useful size)

The SE & CR had five of these locos, as the GNSR was unable to pay for the final batch when Nielsons completed them in 1899 so they were sold to the SECR who categorised them as class G. They didn't last that long on the Southern though and all had gone by about 1928

The SE&CR ones were saturated rather than superheated, but I don't suppose anyone would complain ... (Some of them, such as the picture below, later got reboilered with second-hand GNR boilers anyway, leading to the interesting brain teaser of a locomotive to the design of one pre-grouping company, carrying the boiler of a second and running in the ownership of a third!)

    Fascinating.................

Who reboilered them, the SECR or the Southern, and why use ex GNR boilers............

Post 1880's how many loco designs were used by more than one company? AFAIK only the Beyer Peacock 4-4-0T used on the Metropolitan & The District Railways spring to mind, and some DX Goods which were built by Crewe for the L&Y

The SE&CR reboilered them. Two GNR boilers were bought (which had previously been fitted variously to a J5 0-6-0 and a D2 4-4-0). One of the GNSR boilers was scrapped, and one reconditioned, which then gave a pool of 6 boilers (four GNSR and 2 GNR) which slowly rotated through the five engines on the SE&CR.

Four similar boilers were also bought to reboiler LCDR B2 class 0-6-0s.

As for why use GNR boilers - I suspect for no other reason than they were available at the right price. The alternatives would have been an expensive repair of a presumably worn out GNSR boiler; making a new boiler at Ashford to the GNSR design (not easy without the necessary forming blocks); getting the GNSR to make one (presumably not easy to arrange capacity etc and not much in it for the GNSR during the war). So the GNR boilers were available at a price; and could be seen to fit with minimal modification. A cursory look at the dimensions suggests they were probably bit lower on the main dimensions, but no doubt fitted easily. You can distinguish them by the tall dome and different safety valve relative to the originals - see http://www.ssplprints.com/image/401...-secr-4-4-0-locomotive-no-680-class-g-ajc-161

Depends if you mean by sale or by a single design being built for multiple companies. By sale, Stroudley Terriers ended up working for the LBSCR, SECR, LSWR, IWCR, FY&NR, GWR and numerous minor companies and industrial concerns.

By design - another southern example occurred when John Ramsbottom, of the LNWR, was asked by the board of the SER to prepare a report on motive power on that line. He recommended new passenger engines, for which he just so happened to have a suitable design, with the result that the SER gained a class of 2-4-0 express passenger locos distinctly similar to an LNWR Precedent - though in performance they turned out to be not all they were cracked up to be, the result being that the SER lost the services of their CME but didn't really gain a decent loco until they were reboilered by Stirling.

Any number of standard industrial types of course. The Brecon and Merthyr had 6 locomotives from Stephensons that were copies of GWR medium Metro 2-4-0Ts,and the Neath and Brecon a copy of a Barry Class C 2-4-0T. . Swindon built some new 0-6-0T of various classes for some small welsh lines, and sold others secondhand. Some 0-6-2T designs were used by more than one welsh line too.

A few export orders which were not delivered ended up being sold to British railway companies. The LTSR got two 0-6-0s this way which were intended for Turkey, they were the only tender engines the LTSR ever had. Also the Barry railway got two 0-8-0s intended for Sweden. Also didn't the Cambrian and Furness railways have some Sharp Stewart's which were identical?

What about the (GCR) ROD 2-8-0s which ended up working for various other companies, most notably the GWR but also I think some put in time on the LYR, LNWR etc. (someone will correct me I'm sure, haven't re-checked this.)

Also overseas too, I know about the examples down under in Oz but didn't some end up in China? Also hasn't Cecil Raikes got a brother down under too? I do appreciate we have gone OT as per usual btw! :):)

Some of the Welsh lines had some ROD 0-6-0T too.

When the Mersey Railway was electrified in 1903 it sold all its steam locos off, they were two types, the 0-6-4 tanks, like Cecil Raikes, and some outside cylinder 2-6-2 tanks. The Alexandra Docks Railway bought some of each type, and they came to the GWR at the grouping. So, if anyone ever gets round to restoring Cecil Raikes, it could be done in GWR green!
