But some linesiders are his customers/potential customers. I and many others both travel on and photograph steam tours. I cannot think of any other loco owner that has set out to annoy linesiders on the premise that "they don't contribute."

I was quoting Ralph in the latter post who states passengers are unconcerned. I tend to agree that 95% don't care but if by doing a proper job you can retain/attract the other 5% why not?
Others keep saying it is done to brass off a few photographers or be cussed for the sake of it. That does not seem like the plausible motive of an experienced businessman, to me anyhow. If it is, I would fear for the longer term because setting out to alienate anyone in business never ends well.

But it's just a bit of fun, people seem to be making a lot of assumptions, where has anyone said the livery is permanent?

I dunno, the man gives the photogs a once in a lifetime opportunity to photograph one of these things in black, and all they do is whinge.

True, though even if the intention right now is that it will get repainted, actually doing so - which entails a period out of traffic - becomes harder to entertain on a hard working loco once it is released for revenue-earning service. Time out of traffic is time not earning money.

Meanwhile, whatever the intentions, the plaudits and obvious pride in its appearance that is following 35028 around as it makes its mainline debut today makes an interesting contrast.

I totally agree and doubt it will be. There have been a number of posters that have confidently expressed the opposite on the grounds that it will be literally one in the eye for all those freeloading linesiders. Maybe.
The colour is less important than the quality of the final presentation in my book. Black, blue, maroon not fussed so long as its done well.
My further uninformed forecast. Outings on the Dalesman and Fellsman in black. Repaint to BR green in time for the Lune River train at the end of September.

I get my kicks getting out there and working on board, two consecutive days on the same run in this instance 8am at York and back at 22.00, then Thursday, Carnforth 7am to Scarborough and getting back at 22.20, guess that counts for nothing as far as you are concerned. Who gets the kicks, the doer or the 'expert' at the keyboard.

On the contrary, your sacrifice, determination and commitment is wholly admirable.
What relevance does it have to apparently getting a kick from doing something it is hoped will result in brassing off folk?
Your post seemed to relish that perception so I assumed you must agree with it which would be an odd position to take for someone who obviously takes pleasure from happy people.

"Some" however does not cover the majority and it is the majority he probably enjoys irritating...

Looking at the pics I have seen it looks along way from the finished product. Stressing about the undercoat???

It has been said before on here that WCRC have a loco spray booth, and can turn loco's around in a couple of days, could it be a Tornado undercoat, and a joke being played by management, prior to full re-paint???

Personally think its going to be black, and will look great, the finish has to be perfect to get the best look, but once lined etc..., will have to wait and see.

Quite, It's a complete myth, Short of being paid around £60,000 to work a 12 hour week, And the purchase of a working Tardis, The chances of me turning up for every steam tour is remote, Just because I phot some doesn't mean a won't be a passenger on others, Though I'm far less likely to be a passenger on a train of a promoter who keeps openly having digs at linesiders.

Personally, I couldn't give a toss what colour it is. If it comes down south I will certainly go out and film it;):).
