No way ! to have 46100 and 60163 both out of action is just unheard off ! Feel sorry for everyone who's booked with the Torbay's ! Could the Royal Duchy's be the stronger option for southwest steam this year ?

Apparently 46100 fit to run but couldn't get out of Southall. As far as RDs go, same risk. Single engine. If FTR is failed on Saturday, what's the chance of getting a replacement???

So in American parlance 0 for 2 and £400 down and counting....

FYI we're also booked on the 20th August and 10th September; so if you want a steam hauled TBE don't book on those!!!

Please don't book on the 23rd July, 1020 Shireman! Very disappointing this morning, but at least in my case I only wasted £25 on a return to Paignton, some of which I might get back.

We're on the Duchy that day so you won't be able to blame me if that one goes the same way. Bit worryingly that things like that tend to go in 3's... and the 23rd is the 3rd one....

On the other hand, third time lucky? ;)

Do feel for you. Such a rotten run. Looks as though TBEL did their best to get an alternative loco and other issues got in the way. They must be horrified themselves at the forced circumstances affecting their business and potential impact.

Anybody any the clearer why Tornado was unavailable this weekend and why the sudden road move last week?

Road move was to film more scenes for the Paddington Bear film. FTR failure was cited the reason for no show !

Just wasn't able to make it for 0810 at Newton Meadows near Bath this morning so was planning on Sydney Gardens,Bath for the return leg..8.34pm. Just had an Email from a friend re, cancelled Tornado. Another lucky escape...80 mile round trip. I was about to leave home for Dawlish one day..240 mile round trip to see Princess Elizabeth,as I was about to walk out of the door I thought I'd better check. Cancelled,diesel-hauled. Ugh.. Hopefully,60009 Union of South Africa will be ok..July 18 Paddington >Westbury > Salisbury return. (Crofton)

Heard it was a problem with the clack valves. Probably needed a cold engine to do the necessary work. Not an engineer so just speculating.

Captive audience 'on the day'. Weren't many stewards around by 0730 this morning either. Let's face it, if you look at their advertising, website and Ts&Cs steam haulage could be said to be a bonus if it happens. All the excuses are there. It's all about getting to Kingswear and back. The risk is all with the customer.

You sound quite stoic,it's a good attitude when there's nothing you can do but darned annoying, especially as it's not the first time.

Re. the T&C's. I was just thinking about them and I thought that they'd have it covered due to the obvious potential for break downs with steam.

I checked. It's number 11 . 'The steam locomotive allocated to each train may vary and no guarantee can be given as to the availability of any individual locomotive .Should the designated locomotive be declared unfit to commence or continue the outward service ,it may become necessary to substitute another locomotive. In such circumstances we would make a £15 per person refund or issue a £30 credit voucher to Standard Class passengers,£20 refund or £40 credit voucher for First Class passengers and a £25 refund or £50 credit voucher for Premium Dining passengers. No other liability shall be incurred.

By the way..My wife and I had tickets for a Royal Albert Hall concert recently, time flies but about 6 weeks ago and the train got as far as Swindon. The whole region was affected by a signalling fault at Didcote. They are refunding our fare but not the £180 we spent on the tickets. and £170 on the hotel. Ugh. I was told by a member of staff (in a low voice and eyes rolling..Lol) that the problem was actually caused by a Network Rail engineer who inadvertently cut into the wrong cable. We left Gloucester at 1.00pm and arrived back home via Bath and Bristol at 9.00pm.

That was very unlucky on the London trip John 101 but of course your only "contract" is with the rail provider GWR in your case I guess, and they nor anyone else I suspect will accept consequential losses.
I know when I wrote contracts no supplier would willingly accept them as the risks are far to great.

A lot to be said for annual travel insurance policies even for travel in the UK with our erratic rail service. At least the hotel would have been covered and maybe the tickets.

Seems there's signalling problems affecting the return working

  18. Eveything on stop between Exeter and Taunton. Level crossings with red lights but barriers staying up! Torbay still at NA. What a rotten day for all concerned!

I thought the Dawlish webcam was a little quiet -- a few trains coming through in both directions, but nothing like as many as earlier this afternoon. Very sorry for all passengers and crew.
