    A sort of 're-extension'!

Which raises the interesting question - has there been any cases in the UK of Railways having to reduce the length of line? Do we foresee any more?

The original Dart Valley was one (at both ends at different times - both Ashburton and Totnes Mainline station), and I suppose the Derwent Valley at Murton near York sort of, although there was a gap between the 'full length' and 'reduced' operations.

The llangolen extension project - Definitely ain't going any further from what I was told by a guard while visiting last year, it's taken 40 years apparently just to reach corwen & that's it. Ruabon was mooted but quickly quashed due to the trackbed being built on etc.

ELR to castleton - Long term project that is supposedly going to take at least 4-5 years, negotiations with NR will potentially be an obstacle.

C&PR - Princes risborough is moving along at a fair old pace now, the stub of what was the oxford route at the junction is still in situ & was rumoured to be potentially getting used on the odd occasion for a track bash charter maybe. Also they've installed a loop at chinnor which will do away with the need to de-train everybody while they run round.

Mid Norfolk to County School anyone, as regards @Bean-counter's post about reduction in length didn't the MR Butterley go past Hammersmith when that 1st opened ? But the A38 put the mockers on that? And would the GC having it's double track ripped up by BR in 70's count?

Seem to remember going to a gala or something at the MR Centre and they were using the under construction A38 as a car park.

Mention of the "full length" of the Derwent Valley reminds me that when I was very small I was taken to the local station at Elvington to see the last train to cover the full length of the line to Cliffe Common. It was unusual to see a steam hauled passenger train when the normal traffic on the DVLR was a Class 04 Diesel with a few grain wagons.

Regarding reductions, there is the running track at MOSI in Manchester, to make way for the Ordsall chord.

Well they didn't own the line then, so it probably doesn't count, but if it does then in the early days there was at least one unofficial jaunt beyond the current southern limit.

Talking of reductions it's not a line I've ever been to but didn't the RH&DR once have more double track than it does now?

Yes. Originally double track the full length, but now only between New Romney and Hythe.

It's been retold by someone who was there on one of the unofficial FB groups. Not really my story to tell but suffice to say that 377 'King Haakon' made it rather further into Leicester than is now possible.

For reductions how about the CVR/MCR. The CVR once ran occasionally to oakamoor which was then removed back to Froghall, and the MCR removed the section from Ipstones to Cauldon Lowe. Must be about 5 miles of track in total.

I don't think looking towards Holt town centre is really on the agenda for the NNR. Cromer is more the focus at the moment.

Yes definitely a re extension. With potential lines we could have a mile long steam operated passenger line. And maybe one day 1/2 mile rope hauled demonstration line.

Helston has now reached Truthall Halt (7m from the old junction at Gwinear Rd) from a temporary platform at Prospidnick (6m). Planning permission has been secured for a permanent station at Prospidnick which, when built, will result in a northern extension of roughly 1/4 mile. Truthall is about 1 1/4 miles from the end of the remaining trackbed on the outskirts of Helston.
