WHAT would be the POINT in doing that??? Can you really see anyone in their right mind agreeing to such a ridiculous idea?
No.... crewing difficulties aside, T-Bird Frank and 19D3326 are spot-on in their observations. If 60163 is not likely to be ready in time, or, indeed, available, there is surely still potential for a second train that day - with another loco at the head (perhaps a red one?) and a "meet" somewhere less likely to cause disruption to other traffic, than that suggested at Carlisle.
Just one final thought, given the imminent spate of weekend diversions over the S&C, can anyone be absolutely certain that even 1T57 will be permitted to run on the planned Sunday???

There was no need to be quite so offensive there. I was only suggesting it as a potential way of showing how far the preservation movement had come since 1968, the fact that a large express passenger locomotive can be constructed from scratch.

Personally, I didn't perceive anything even remotely "offensive" in Long Drag's words and I am sure many others will concur. If you do wish to particiate in forums like this, you really ought to come to terms with the fact that, very occasionally, you might come to be at the receiving end of some 'flack' and then to learn to abide with this.

The real problem here - as I see it as the proverbial "armchair woffler" - is that when the pages of any thread become clogged up with irrelevant, unworkable or impractical suggestions (if not also going totally off at a tangent to core issues), people tend to lose interest and don't come back! Certainly such threads no longer draw the attention of the people that any message is really intended to be aimed at.

After so long - and so much hard graft - I should imagine that having their pride-and-joy sat motionless in some siding or bay platform would be absolutely the last thing the "Tornado" guys would wish to consider. Again, in the past we have had silly, but light-hearted, comments suggesting that, for example, a 'Spamcan' be rostered for 1T57, but if I was faced with the onerous duty of finding an alternative loco to 70013, for whatever reason, then 60163 would be my first choice. How totally appropriate!!

Fair enough, I can see now that having 60163 as a static exhibit would send out the wrong message as to what the A1SLT are trying to achieve. My main bone of contention was that Long Drag gave know reason for rubbishing the idea in the first place.

However, life is too short for arguing so I am willing to drop the subject.

    Dan

    It's certainly coming together.

It must be a great feeling for all those who have supported the project from Day 1 to see it all coming together. I can't imagine the sense of pride those people will feel when it first steams.

    Well done.

the total needed (apart from the £800,000) has also shrunk from £55,000 to £49, 000

I must admit, now is it nearly ready I am find my feelings a bit mixed. I have generally been against the project since its inception for various reasons. (Rather see an ex-BR loco restored, too big to be economical on preserved lines, for the money we could overhaul Blue Peter, Flying Scotsman and Green Arrow etc etc etc.)

All these things still remain, yet at the same time one has to bow down to what this group has achieved. I wish the group the best of luck and while I have not contributed to the loco, in favour of ex-BR projects, I am sure I will run into the A1 at some point.

i like newbuilds, but i find we should keep our present fleet up and running and i agree

i do however greatly support the A1 project as it was a massive gap in preservation.
Also i would like hengist to get more popular as i liked the clan class

I still want to know how an A1 can seriously be described as a 'massive gap' in preservation? How different is it actually from an A2, or for that matter from a Gresley pacific? Just beacause there were quite a lot of them, there aren't any now and people remeber them in the 1960s doesn't mean that they are a 'massive gap' in preservation.

A real 'Massive gap' would be the lack of any complete broad guage mainline locos - 55 years worth of one of the UK's largest railway companies absent.

There are any number of of 'massive gaps' in our loco collection, most from the 19th century, but what about pre grouping 4-6-0 express engines? Lode Star is the sole surviver, although the B12 is built to a pre grouping design. The LNWR has no express survivers from the 20th cetury at all.

I take my hat off to the A1 crew, and if that is what they wanted to build (and presumably they did) fine. It is just such a shame that most of the first 100 years of our steam railway history is forgotten in favour of the last 40.

Yes good point Man of Kent. I quite agree with you about all your points. I'm not sure how the A1 fills the gap when we already have an example of a Peppercorn pacific in 60532. It will be nice to see the locomotive completed as it will be a very impressive achievement but it only fills a gap in the LNER pacific classes.

We lack a decent express passenger engine from the Scottish companies for starters.
