Please could you provide some detail on the operation of the Santa Trains. Is Ring Haw actually doing the work going to Matlock or is the diesel assisting/pushing?
Does the train go to Matlock Town station or Riverside? Thanks

Ring haw pulls the train in one direction and the deisel pulls back, there's no run round facility at Matlock town, were running into Matlock town rather than riverside which is a quarter mile outside the main town station where there is a run round.

Riverside was our original terminus when we first opened into Matlock as was the end of BRs line and their run round back then so it was the closest we could get at the time, when all the developments started we were supposed to have a seperate run round and platform adjacent to the main town NR station but various cock ups with planning saw that plan curtailed,as well as messing the bus company around (they were supposed to be able to drive in and out their depot, instead they have to reverse out) ,it also saw several problems with bridge heights and drains in the area which annoyed the council a bit, don't you just love planners

Yes, a lot of time, effort and money is being put into Darley Dale to give it the authentic MR/LMS look.

Quick question @kestreleyes , what (if there was one) is the standard spacing of MR platform lamp posts - full-height ones?

    Thanks

I'm not kestreleyes, but I do have a copy of "Midland Style" by the Historical Model Railway Society - this has some detail about the lamps, but says nothing about spacing. I suspect that the spacing was dependent on any curvature of the platform, presence of buildings, canopies or other structures, so was designed individually for each station.

I do have a question myself - are the lamps lit by gas or by electricity?

That was my initial thought John, got that book too but couldn't find the answer :-( Not sure (m)any railway company had standards for such things, not even paint spec!

    Cheers

I was wondering about spacing at Broadway. The platform lamps there are planted at 13m centres, which seems too close. They will end up with no fewer than 22 lamp posts.
Toddington is 20m, the Toddington drive 30m.

    Any other people with measurements?

Just needs the Midland Railway footbridge and it will be nearly the same now as when it was built (with exception of the toilet block)

    Well done

The new (but mainly original MR) Darley Dale ones are electric, no doubt gas back in the day.

Thanks - we have in recent years erected two MR lamp-posts, which were gas but have been discretely electrified, in the garden at St Albans South signal box.

Platform lamppost spacing - Darley Dale didn't have equally spaced posts... might partly be due to the platform extension, (it maybe loosing length at the other end when station road was extended. Rob uncovered foundations, probably platform edge ones, on the same alignment when doing some of the works for Peter and Andrew Briddons shed at the other side of the road. ) I measured the post spacing for some cable a while back, and there were hardly two gaps the same. They are at least opposite each other, some evidence for this from where gas pipes were in the platform walls. But then the MR had 3 different heights of post, and 2 different lengths of ladder bars, and some posts have 2, or some 1.... Got some more post drilling and tapping and ladder bar extending and thread cutting for Ben soon if I find some bar..... Now Scott and Ben have been fitting the building lamps and brackets (2 types of those...) its very evident that most of the up side posts are the wrong height.

Just needs the Midland Railway footbridge and it will be nearly the same now as when it was built (with exception of the toilet block)

The inside of the up building hardly transports you back to MR or LMS days though, the exhibition material in one room is very good, but its a missed opportunity compared to waiting rooms at the GC or KWVR. Wish I had time to help do something about it.

Could be a case of NO IM SPARTACUS !

Soz didn't reply,''twas Christmas and all ,with family taking precedent etcetera, hope you all have a good new year from us all down here and tbh I haven't got a clue on spacing of lampposts but Harvey and Ben have answered that already I see

We're slowly building a feel for heritage which tbh the railway never had in its infancy, keep an eye out on the footbridge and rowsley box plus other things in the pipeline, like that proverbial iceberg it all takes time, slowly bit by bit

The Hope Valley Line is discussed in relation to changing transport trends in general and rural railways in particular. The talk will also outline some of the key opportunities and challenges for the future of the Hope Valley Line and other rural railways in Britain.

His academic interest focused on transport studies, demography and statistical analysis. Much of his research has been on the development of sustainable transport systems in Britain while his research into overseas railways has involved extensive travel on the railways of North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia.
