Be interesting to see if it happens, I'd certainly be interested in a few days in North Wales.

It would be good event, hopefully the visit will encourage the smr to consider more steam operation. The brb is a great line with modern steam but with the heritage locomotives also in use in the summer. The do have diesels but are used very sparingly

The Old BRB engine would be fantastic to see but trialing one of the "new - now twenty years old" build engines on the SMR might also be more perswasive to the SMR management still

It will indeed be interesting to see if it comes to fruition. I don't know whether the BRB uses the same rack pitch (120mm) as Snowdon but 100mm is the standard in Europe. Snowdon also has gripper rails which I don't think exist on the BRB (I've never been there.) It would also probably need safety verification by an I.C.P.

There are two deciding factors which affect weather the BRB locos will fit Snowdon. First is the width of the stone work on the viaducts and bridges. The second is the brake drums on the gripper girders. The Snowdon brake drums are slightly smaller and use brake blocks which are above the bottom of the drums. The BRB uses brake belts. These and the lack of clearing the girders which they don't have in Switzerland probably will fowl on Snowdon.

The pitch of the Abt system is standard at 120mm. This applies across several continents. The only cog railway that I can say for curtain that has a pitch of 4 inches or nominally 100mm is the marsh system of Mount Washington.

I agree it would be great if it came about but as much as anything I would like to see the Snowdon steamer which are out of use rebuilt.

Looking back at SMR facebook and twitter feeds, all links to the articles have been deleted. I'm guessing it's not happening.

Many thanks for the update. Sounds exciting!unfortunately we are due to be in the area the week before. I guess the locomotive will arrive a bit earlier so there should be an opportunity to see it, even if not to travel

I did a search for postings anywhere on the forum with "Snowdon" and it didn't come up.

    Anyway thanks for the info.

Nice. I’m not 100% sure without looking it up but I think No.2 is the one that took me up the Rothorn about 20 years ago (in freezing fog! I was the only passenger, had a cup of tea at the top with the train crew and got a guided tour of the workshops when we got down. And very nearly missed the train back from Brienz as a result. A memorable trip, that was!)
