Well personally having the gala in June is something i look forward too as it brings with it the longer evenings, although not allways the sunshine

in regards to visitors with the (large) shunter already on the list i hear why not a type two and at least try to get a mainline visitor either 60,the right 66 or 70, i think its unlikely to get a 68, i know they are not to most popular things in the world but if you get the right one it WILL get bums on seats

Why would anyone want that at a gala , when you can get them on the mainline??

Big waste of a budget blowing it on a hst ...

Prototype HST might not be a bad shout though

To be fair to everyone the ideal would be to have it in a different month each year. The current June weekend is ideal for some but not for others. I have mentioned that for those employed or associated with schools, colleges and universities timing couldn't be worse. This though needs good advance communication between the railways that have large diesel galas and it is 2018 that should now be being discussed. Surely it benefits every railway to avoid major event clashes and vary from year to year when particular events are held. Advance co-ordination may also prove beneficial with regard to visiting locomotives allowing some to go 'on tour' rather than making a one off visit.

I think the idea of running a freight that IS rideable with the 09 early on the Friday through to Minehead so it would tick two boxes, 1 anyone who likes the rods and wants to go full length of the line and, 2 it would get the 09 into place to act as brake translator for the ex MOD shunters at Minehead on Brake van rides

Yes, please. I remember seeing this at Bedminster, going through the cleaning process after a trial run, think it was in 1975, so it has a Westcountry connection.

I'm hoping that it being called a diesel gala will actually mean that rather than a mixed traction weekend, the WSR does seem to think using the term 'diesel gala' is like swearing in church...

A small loco like a Class 25 or possibly a 26 would be great, home fleet to me has really missed a 25. A class 40 would be good, maybe 40013 could bring a visiting engine(s) to the line. Otherwise a 44 would make a nice change. The Class 17 if on 2 engines or D7076 would also be very welcome.

As for a visiting loco as this is vital how about a Colas 70...

Presume that in mentioning 'big' diesel galas you simply forgot the biggest heritage diesel railway of the lot-you know, the one that has had in the last 3 years alone 10 14's, 5 55's, 4 40's, let alone the 20+ mainline locos based there.

Would need a translator loco, because the loco front fouls the corridor connection,

I agree with you on that, but 41001 and it's air braked stock with somthing else on the other end, you could do what the Mid Norfolk did and have a run right up to the mainline connection at Taunton, then use what's on the other end to drag it back, plus you could do it so the HST leads on certain days then it's on the back on others.

Not if you have some air braked stock.

And it carries on. Right a quick question when your behind a loco (steam or diesel) and it's making a lovely noise, you have the windows open, do you actually care whether it's mk1's, mk3's or GW auto coach that your in?
