Thanks very much indeed and apologies for the slow reply; pleased you enjoyed it and it certainly looked an excellent tour to be on.

Thanks for that - looks interesting. Thanks also for the photo's of the Riccarton signs - I wish I found such treasures in my loft ;) The sign which is now at the station appeared some time around 2005, and if you look on flickr you can see what the site was like around that time, when a group was active in clearing it and relaying some track. Without that work there would have been much less to see when I went, but nature has nevertheless quickly reclaimed much of it again. I believe that much of the same group transferred their activities to Whitrope, and still plan to relay the track back to Riccarton.

    Hi all,

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread - but I'm sat here rapidly approaching Xmas and find myself reflecting on the last year, with this tour and 1Z48 being the absolute stand out highlights for me personally.
I was privileged to be on both of these tours and can't wait to see the tribute to 1Z48 on DVD (I believe/hope Santa has got it me for Xmas!), but I was wondering if there had been any thoughts about making a DVD of this tour?
I'm sure there must be some stunning unseen footage or a recording from the footplate and I'd hope that this could be tied up with any historic archive footage of the original tour.
So does anybody know if a DVD release is planned or being considered?

    Cheers everyone and Happy Christmas.

    Phil

...... and on a day when the weather in my neck of the woods has been positively dire, digging through my old files, I've just come across another picture of the original 'Scottish Lowlander' tour and thought some followers of this thread might find it to be of interest.
On Saturday, 26th September 1964, No 46256 'Sir William A Stanier FRS' passes Moore (south of Warrington) during its northbound journey from Crewe to Carlisle. The exemplary external condition of the locomotive belies the fact that this was to be its very last day in service. Only a few weeks later, during a trip to see Nos 49361 and 49407 undertaking their own final journeys, I photographed it - still in almost as immaculate order - being cut-up in a West Midlands scrapyard.

The story goes that, when Cashmores received it, they, apparently, thought that they had been sent the wrong loco ... and rang BR to query the matter!! 'Tis only a pity that they did not possess the foresight and generosity of Alderman AE Draper, is it not?!!

Standing alongside Sir William Stanier in Carlisle this September would have been the ultimate pairing.

It would indeed. The closest I have seen was 60009 and 86101 Sir William Stanier FRS at Carlisle, Feb 2013 ;)

Ron White has it right in the superb TVP DVD 'Britain's Lost Main Line: The Waverley Route' when he says something along the lines of "this was the last day for 46256; how can anyone scrap something in that condition - what a waste of good material!"

... and to draw a line under it all, if merely as a reminder, THIS is what 27/09/14 was all about!

A rather late request, has anyone got any photos of No 9 backing down onto the train at Carlisle? A friend who was on the footplate would like one or two for his collection.

Are you talking about last years run or the original? being on both, either will be interesting, but the original one I think will be the winner.

Just been looking back and found this quote, maybe you might like to assess it in the light of her performances more recently.....

Can't believe its nearly a year since this masterpiece of a railtour, not to mention what has happened in the intervening months. For me it's a straight choice between this and the four-day Cath-Ex to Scotland of 2013 for the best tour I've done, but I think I can safely say 'The Scottish Lowlander' pips it for the sheer amount of logistics, steam mileage and route interest crammed into one day. To quote Ponsonby when sharing snuff with Uxbridge at Waterloo: "I doubt we'll see as like again..."

Yes hard to believe that it has been a year but it is still worthwhile a round of applause for those that made this tour a huge success.

Just started watching it and immediately gave up. Music is fine in its rightful place, but that is not as a soundtrack to a film of a train. If the original film has no sound, either leave it like that or add a commentary. I could click the mute button, but then I'd worry that I might be missing some real sounds or commentary.

Please let me assure you, that after watching this great piece of film from 1964, that there is no commentary or sound, so mute it now, then you can watch it, because you are missing nothing !!! Enjoy...
