Ian and myself spent Friday doing painting which was lucky as it was a beautiful day indeed and the paint dried very quickly Riversides cream is now done so the marroon comes next and we ALS finished repainting matlocks distant. Next time weather permitting is Darley distant and either riverside maroon or rowsleys lamps

The cabins then follow next month

Elsewhere I've been drilling and making bits for signalling at home. image.jpg image.jpg

    DMus

Only a quickie update on the Dmus under restoration at rowsley after calling in the other morning and having a chat with the gents working away upon them.

Class 108, The exterior paintwork continues with plenty of sanding down filling and painting to get that smooth coating back on, both sides look better now, very nice smooth coat of paint it is too, quite impressed :). image.jpg
One cab end roof panel has been removed to allow work to be done on its fibreglass section , the seats have also been removed on the other dmu to allow work to be done on the framing and the seats and some window repair work obviously where the water has taken its tolls on the edges, work progresses nicely and the days are looking better than they were when they arrived, keep up the good works folks.

The work on the dmus continues
And the paintwork is looking goodson the set for the gcr, the svr set is now masked off ready for to remove the blemishes and repaint the sides.

The work on D8 has started and the exhausts and cylinder tops have been removed for inspection. (There's some serious engineering in one of them Peaks ;)
    image.jpg

During the week the locos of Mr Briddon were all shunted out for moving to Darley Dale ,seen here at Rowsley
    image.jpg

Lastly on S&T I managed to get completely soaked fitting the top weights to the self adjusting gear at rowsley, the other two couldn't be fitted as it transpires the old bolts had been sheared off inside the lower weights. So that's a job for the oxy burner to blow the old bolts out and then we can fit new ones and the top weights also, apart from that John and myself also attended rectifying a few faults (when it stopped raining :) image.jpg

As far as I'm aware the two in the shed are contract work for the SVR and GCR. There is a suburban set outside that is resident at the railway which is being restored also but the contract works are the priority at present. It's likely there may be testing runs but I'd wait and see what is planned.

image.jpg image.jpg Had a full day today and cleared a good few jobs off the list, firstly the rusted away lamp case on the gate has been replaced together with a new lamp holder and red light filter. At some point I will make this an led unit as is the other gate lamp, the old case won't be binned as I can still weld a decent base back on once the old tin but has been cut away

That job done and with the weather getting warmer I headed up to Darley dale and cracked on with repainting the cabin, the maroon and the cream have been redone and when next down on an operating day wel redo the window boards in grey, the bargeboards will towards the end of the year be replaced as there's one on each end that needs some new timber.

I also managed to redo the gate targets and the gate lamps at Darley with the remainder of the tin of paint

The rest of the early afternoon as time was still aplenty was used up for maintenance on the batteries ,track circuits and also to replace a snapped bolt on the diamond plate atop church lane 14 signal.

With some time still to spare by three pm I headed up to Rowsley where Chris and myself managed to get the errant seized bolts In the weight adjusters burned out with the oxycetalene before heading back to Darley to collect the other clutch part that Pete and Andrew Briddon has made for us , so after a little drilling on the pillar drill tommorow I should be able to fit that and the last two extra weights one evening later this week and then they're finished.

On other notes I attended the Institute of Railway Signal Engineers AGM at York on Sunday with colleagues from other lines, apart from getting let loose on the worlds oldest signalled model railway (the ex L&Y training layout from Manchester Victoria).

I also found there's planned to be another technical workshop next year held by the IRSE this time it will be on telecommunications systems which if I can I am trying to arrange some places upon.

I also while at the NRM managed to measure up they're turnover frame and came to the conclusion the drawing is wrong and when made the bed plates are simply drilled to the five inches roughly that we've had to do with Rowsley's bed plates ,but that was no surprise :)

On other news managed a quick chat with the gents restoring the dmus up Rowsley shed, the roof is back on and the final painting is being sorted and managed a quick chat with Pete who is continuing with fitting the purlins to the shed roof .

Also had a chat with the lads working on the dmus, they're on with varnishing up on one unit and the whiskers are being added to the cab fronts, the cab roof has been repaired and upholstery is being worked on now on the seating units, just look at that proper image.jpg shine :)

    This weekend saw the annual
Bus rally descend upon us, around fifty buses and coaches made the journey to Rowsley, with buses and coaches then giving trips to Bakewell,Chatsworth and lineside via Darley Dale to Matlock to connect with the trains, I also got some time to talk with a few of the railways groups who were there to show what they do to the Puic, the LMSCA shed was open for viewing, the HST were running brake van rides between the loading dock and their sheds so visitors could see their work ongoing there and the Renown and Repulse chaps were out in force too with their stand by the turntable, I also chatted with the narrow gauge volunteers and one of the Ashover light railway society volunteers about their work, currently they are sorting out the stock sheds and storage at Rowsley, work continues to progress their shed through the design stages etcetera and they hope to have some more news soon which they can report on this forum.

Myself apart from photographing buses I actually did a bit of maintenance at Riverside :)

We also had a fly past of a Dakota en route to somewhere, thanks go obviously to the folks who brought the buses and coaches for making a great event yet again and also to those who were doing the crowd control (it was busy) and the car parking at Rowsley which was backed upto the main road by Sunday afternoon as well as a thank you to the buffet train and shop folks, keep up the good work :)
