The Tanat Valley Light Railway has a nice Facebook Group, where you can follow the progressing restauration fo the Andrew Barcley 2352.

A week on from a Facebook statement (18th Nov) that "due to 90% of the boiler needing replacement we will not be buying it", images of parts arriving are being posted. Can we assume that the "it" not being bought refers to the boiler alone and that the rest of the loco is being purchased?

This is @stuartreeder 's project. I could lay money that it will still be in pretty much the same condition in 5 years time.

It looks as if he was contemplating buying a scrap boiler which requires 90% replacement, he has wisely decided against.

I like how he is urging people to come and work on "my" engine, Oh dear :)

Having just seen the post by @ghost I suspect we have all the answers we require. Even a boiler that small comes with a pretty stiff price. One for my six-monthly trawl list, methinks.

Some serious progress on Peckett OQ "Mardy Monster" at the Elsecar Rly. New axleboxes, horn guides, springs and pins have been manufactured. Boiler work is seemingly largely done, so with luck this bruiser will be back in the land of the living sooner rather than later. No log-in required for it's public FB page:

    Just to clarify

Yes the boiler that I was going to get needed 90% of it replacing "apparently" but would have ment bits that have not long arrived could have been retested and used in helping replace the parts that needed replacing.

These bits that arrived the other day are the odd bits that were included in the sale of the loco (apart from brake weight shaft) and were not put on the lorry with the loco.

And for the 5 - 10 year estimate for it being in the same condition

All I can say Is you never know as it all depends on funds available but I have put 10-15 years for a rough estimate for full restoration.

@stuartreeder . given I think your location is in the South West , having your loco somewhere rather inaccessible in Mid Wales with limited facilities to hand cannot be ideal in making progress , or being able to control others working on your loco

What is your plan for the restoration . Are you funding and others restoring ?

It was the only place that had siding space available and a good rate for storage.

Yes I'm funding the project myself

The plan is to fully restore the loco and replace all the missing and worn out parts

How do you intend to do that, given that the TVR don't have any engineering facilities or undercover storage?

This coming New Year's Day, Pecket 1555 "Ivor the Engine" will be running her last public service before overhaul at the Swindon and Cricklade Railway!

She'll also be running every Sunday in December during our Santa Specials.

Come give her a good send off!

    Bagnall 2746 The Duke

The motion overhaul is now complete, permanently assembled, with all cotters in place. The drain cocks and links are next in line.

LMS report good progress on the boiler; the first batch of 80 replacement side stays have been fitted and the new foundation ring is being drilled out ready for riveting. The new copper tube plate has been fully formed and will undergo a trial fit before the holes for the tubes and rivets are drilled out. The new backhead is expected in January.

Will this have enough grunt to work with the usual GCRN rake which is load 4 & has it got the water capacity for full line workings? Little industrial should go down well there.

Also does anyone know have the ribble railway gang at preston started work on the yank tank 30072 from keighley? I knew it'd got a new owner but there wasn't a mention of whether it'll be working on the KWVR or the preston docks branch.

With regards industrials are there currently any pugs working? Never seen 1 apart from a brief glimpse of keighleys pug.

The two Manning Wardles are 16 inch cylinder locos and this size is will be comfortable with trailing loads of up to load 5. The boiler design is noted for being free steaming. Hudswell Clarke Julia is being progressed with enthusiasm, since the overhaul of sister engine Wissington (NNR) was completed, as it has shown that it is a very capable engine. The opportunity to operate off peak services with 2 coaches would be very suitable territory for this engine.

Depends what you mean by 'pug'?!

I'm sure there must be some pugs working north of the border? ;-)

51218 and No.19, however are non-operational at the KWVR and Ribble I believe though.

Here is a supplier worth knowing: Miniature Pressure Gauge Ltd of Halesowen. Despite the name they do traditional brass steam pressure gauges up to for example, 300psi, 6 inch diameter, current price on ebay £69 plus postage, test certificate included. They also do simple vacuum gauges but not the duplex type. Buy your loco a present this Christmas.
