61005, I rather like that 61018 Gnu had to have a rather long plate to allow for bolt spacing. Did the same happen with the 4 letter plates on others?

Thanks for your response. From my reading about the development of loco design under Churchward he investigated practice in other countries. The combined cylinder block and half smokebox saddle came from America. Then he arranged for the purchase of the French Atlantic's. Locomotive engineers who used international practice were not common and nobody else I can think of in this country did it to the same extent as Churchward

Common misconception - he gets all the publicity thanks to the football angle, but Euan Lucie-Smith was before Tull and I think that’s now been verified. Unfortunately his very establishment background means he’s not as helpful for people who want a good story about success despite the class and colour barriers.

additionally, it’s virtually certain that neither of them was actually the first - frankly by the time you’re back into the early 19th century people cared a lot less than at the end of it.

He was a battlefield promotion by pressure from his men in the teeth of army opposition, a top flight footballer in spite of his colour. I'd say he's still a pretty good role model, even if he wasn't the first.

There were big problems with the steel fireboxes on the Bulleid Pacifics into the 1950s which was only solved by introducing the French TIA - the initials for"Traitment Integral Armande"
Certainly, the first ten of the steel fireboxes were supplied by North British who supplied boilers with them for export & must have known the necssary points that had to be understood to make a sucess of them. It is very probable that that they convinced the Southern Railway drawing office that longer stays were needed to give the needed extra flexibility compared to copper plates and so a proposed 50 square foot grate became 48 and a half to go within the smaller inner firebox.
I have always wondered about these experiments at Swindon and hoped to find more details and a fuller explanation of them.

Ah, so there *was* a thread for it! Unfortunately the forum search facility rejected "V4" as "too short".

Hopefully a moderator will move the posts from the P2 thread into here.

It's about time that film got the recognition it deserves. Will the Scottish speaking King of Spain be coming to name it?

Why not call it 'Independence' , you might get funding from Nicola, but don't mention her ferries fiasco.
