Steam Railway SR498 – on sale now!

Discussion in 'Steam Railway' started by Thomas Bright, Nov 1, 2019.

It’s all about re-creating the past in the latest issue of Steam Railway, as we unearth lost parts from scrapped ‘Fifteen Guinea Special’ ‘Black Five’ No. 44781.

Our cover star, under restoration ‘5MT’ No. 45163, pays tribute to the ‘1T57’ veteran following the discovery of the No. 44781’s cab roof on the site of the former Bartlow station in Essex – the location for the filming of The Virgin Soldiers, in which the ‘Black Five’ starred before it was scrapped on-site in the late 1960s.

The theme of ‘re-creating the past’ continues as we say farewell to ‘O2’ No. W24 Calbourne 1966-style using original headboards from the end of Isle of Wight steam, discover how Graham Fairhurst has restored WDLR Baldwin ‘10-12-D’ No. 608, and conclude our exploration of narrow gauge new-build projects. There’s more, as photographer Peter Zabek showcases his finest Eastern Region re-creations.

Elsewhere, we detail two of the biggest steam events of the year – the North Yorkshire Moors and Severn Valley railways’ autumn steam galas.

As always, we bring you the very latest news, comment and analysis from the world of preservation, including:

    · £160k appeal launched to return Taff Vale No. 28 to steam

    · Middleton ‘Y7’ No. 1310 is an impostor

    · A1 Trust to build new workshop next autumn

    · Isle of Wight abandons Ryde extension

    · Ffestiniog bids for lottery cash to restore Boston Lodge

There’s all this and more, including our regular Down Main, industrial, narrow gauge and Irish steam news columns, in the latest edition of Steam Railway – the world’s biggest-selling steam magazine. On sale now!
